I believe just the regular heartgard only kills the heartworm, but the heartguard Plus-which is most often the one used now days, also kills roundworms & hookworms. It does not kill tapeworms.

Theres a fairly new one out now from Virbac, called Iverhart Max, this kills the heartworm, Roundworms, hookworms & Tapes.

Heartgard wont prevent/control whipworms. If you have a problem with Giardia or coccidia it wont get those either. Run a stool sample in to your vet practice and have it checked.

Yes, roundworms & hookworms.....

If you are concerned, Like Judy said, just take a sample in and have it checked, I dont think it costs very much to have that done.

But its not all that uncommon for a dog to have loose stools every now & then, it could be alot of things, even something as simple as stress.

Have the stool checked if you see fit, or worm the dog and give it a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin morning and night. Everything from the food you feed to stress can make a dog have runny stools.

It wouldn't hurt to give some wormer ontop of the heartgard, would it? Are you suppposed to worm once a month or only if they get worms. I saw a thread about using horsewormer? What should i get?

TruBlue,

Not trying to steal the thread, but what does the pumpkin do? What kind of pumpkin? I just thought this was interesting. I assume it is a natural anti-inflamatory or soothing to the digestive track?

Canned pumpkin. It's a common remedy for both runny stools and constipation.

If they have giardia, though, it don't work. Flagyl, man, Flagyl. Don't leave home without it.
