Pyometra?

Anyone have any experience with it? What are the chances of her getting it again?

if they treated it non-surgically, then she very well could get it again. most likely a few weeks or so after she comes in heat again. BUT, if they spayed her (which is the sure-fire treatment), then she CANT get it again.

She's on antibiotics right now and schedule for a spay next wednesday. The vet said that the uterus wasn't that big. It's open Pyometra so he wanted her on the antibiotics for a week before the surgery.

Spaying will cure it

hopefully the antibiotics will stay ahead of it

that can be some nasty stuff to deal with

spaying is the certain way to not have any future problems. While waiting, watch her very close this is something to not delay .

I trust you trust your vet..? I want to post an experience I recently had. A very nice Wire I had in for FF for her Master hunter had a heat cycle while here. Shortly after I noticed a uckky discharge. Told the owner (lived in Pa) so I took her to the vet. Vet said open pymetra and to be safe should spay as soon as possible. This was a very nice young bitch that was destened for show ring and MH and future hopes of breeding. This vet even said her white cell count was slightly elavated but not danderous yet. I suggested (after reading some stuff on the internet) that he pick her up and take her to Dr Hutchison ( repro specialist) in Ohio for checking. The owner drove all nite to get here, picked her up and went directly up to Dr Hutch's for her check up. Guess what...Nothing was wrong. 8) The vet said a bitch can have a discharge after a heat cycle. He did ultrasound, blood work, ect. Nothing wrong. Her white cell count was not the level this vet had said...Dr Hutch said that any sign of anything, vets are taught anymore to just spay the dog. I think this first vet we went to went a step further and trumped up an off bloodwork, and was even charging 600+ dollars for the spay because a pyometra was involved. Just beware, you may want a second opinion if it is a good dog you wanted to breed at some point.

Our oldest female mixed breed had pyro. Full blown can't hardly function pyro. Came up really fast. she kept herself pretty clean till it knocked her on her butt. Thats why we found it so late. The vet wanted to charge 2500.00 for the spay because she was sick and would only give her a 20% chance to live through the surgery. I argued with the vet for a while over him even asking me to accept those odds and he said it was her only choice. Die or have the surgery. I told him to put her down if those were the odds. He argued with me on that and tried to make me feel like an a$$ for suggesting that and still argued for the surgery. I asked why some antibiotic therapy wasn't an option till she had a better odds of living. Now he's pissed again because he doesn't want a layman working smarter than he is. Two weeks and two different meds, he guessed wrong on the first one, and she is healthy enough for a 800.00 spay and a 95% chance of living. The dog is 15yrs old now. I never saw him again as our Vet after that. Not that the ones we have an option on are any better, They just want to turn patients for the money. Even heard a receptionist bragging about that while waiting for a chip to be implanted in our first GSP. But in any case They can live a healthy and normal life after the disease is taken care of properly.
