Bump on neck and head

Post by rstbkt69 » Mon Sep 15, 2008 2:59 pm

Man when will this poor guy get to the point that he can just be a dog and not a patient. 4 mo old GSP. Had deodecmic (sp ) mange and got a cream to rub on him and some benadryl for the itching. Diagnosed with Giardia and was given Panacur. Those two were from last week. Now on the back of his head and neck where his "Smart Bump" is, thats what we call it , the bump on his skull where his spine joins the skull is a bump about the size of a golf ball. Took a couple of days to get that big. I felt it and it is not hard. It seems to have one or two "Channels" ,is the best way to discribe them, running through it, maybe like a blood vessel. It is not attached to any tissue so to speak like what I think a tumor would feel like and it does not bother him when I mess with it. Any ideas. My thought was to see what happened in a couple of days and see if it went down on its own. He is always bumping his head under the coffee table or under the bed. I thought he may have a splinter there but there is nothing oozing out anywhere. Any experience with this.

I have seen that on dogs, they get a knock on the head and it causes that bone to raise up. Do not think anything you can do, it will go down but takes a long time.

This is more like a big sack of something under his skin. Not like a goose egg. Thanks for the reply.

Well brenda you may have been right. It swelled up to the size of a egg and then just started to go down. it smaller than it was this morning but still there. I'll see what it looks like in the AM

Took him to the vetsandthey drew about 10 cc of what would best be described as cranberry juice out of the lump and that indicates that he just had a bad bump like brenda had suggested. We tend to freak out after havig lost a pet to cancer.

Man this thing is huge again this morning. It doesn't seem to bother him but should I try to drain it again or just leave it alone?

I know that has to be uncomfortable, but all seriousness aside. Isn't that the funniest thing you ever saw on a dog. I've nicknamed him Beldar, from the Coneheads.

Drawing fluid usually does not help. It just takes time. That is a really bad one.

Is there a limit to how big we can let it get. It's practically holding his eyes open as it is. I know GSPs usually have that " I'm scared of the camera" look but this is really ......................eye opening. :D

Hey, how come nobody has told me how cute my puppy is? Everyone else always gets a "Nice looking pup" when they post a picture.

I feel so sorry for your good boy, but I just had to laugh when I saw your photo of your dogs facelift. I hope he heals alright. Poor little guy. Denise

Hey rstbkt69

I just shot you an e-mail, but in short dont worry it will go down on its own. His feet either out ran his brains and he ran full speed into something or something fell on him. Dont be suprised if it takes 2-4 weeks to totally heal up, but it will. Also I personally wouldnt keep taking him to the vet to draining it, it will just fill back up. Just be patient and it will go away. Sure looks funny though doesnt he, lol.

I alway tell people I like the males GSPs better than Females because they're just big Lug Nuts, and Knot Heads, well you literaly have a Knot Head, lol
