Pro Plan Shredded vs. PP regular question
Pro Plan Shredded vs. PP regular question
Info first: Regular (kibble only) Chicken & Rice PP - 26% protein, 16% fat - 1 cup = 112 grams
Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice - 26% protein, 16% fat - 1 cup = 96 grams
Feeding recommendations: Reg = 36 to 50 pound dog = 2 - 2 1/3 cups per day
51 to 75 pound dog = 2 1/3 - 3 cups per day
Shredded = 36 to 50 pound dog = 2 1/3 - 3 cups per day
51 to 75 pound dog = 3 - 4 cups per day
WHY is there such a big difference in feeding rates? Does anyone know?
I have looked all over both bags looking for calorie counts and cannot find if the shredded blend has such a drastic drop in calories per cup that would justify such an increase in feed. I am SO glad they are coming back out with the kibble-only. Luckily I have found a supply and have only had to try a single bag of the shredded blend.

Its the difference in the processing. The Shreaded is bulkier so you have to feed more cups. It's like feeding a lb of popcorn before it is processed compared to after it is popped. Unpopped you would have to feed 4 cups and after it is popped you would have to feed 40 cups but you are still feeding 1 lb and get the same nutirnts out of it.
Every company does that but it doesn't make a lot of sense except that their customers feed by volume and not weight.
The answer is they are the same since there is more cups in the bag of Shreaded compared to the regular.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

In other words, more filler in the shredded? Filler = bulkier.
But Ezzy, I am confused by

So smaller bag, more filler, same price? The answer is they are the same since there is more cups in the bag of Shreaded compared to the regular.
Re: Pro Plan Shredded vs. PP regular question
No filler. That doesn't even make sense plus why would you use for a filler, why would you ship a filler all over the country at todays prices and why would you increse the cost with no benefit to youor the customer?
I don't know what size packages they use but was just trying to explain what the difference is with ALL feeds when you start comparing them by volume when all of the guarantees are written for weight.

Less it be misunderstood , I feed a good quality dog food.
However this subject always brings back some memories.
Have we gone overboard when it comes to examining dog food?
In the 50's my dad raised beagles. As was common in those years they were whelped out in the barn. I only remember losing one litter.
My dad fed them the left over food from the construction sight "meals on wheel" truck - mostly meat pies , salads , raisin turnovers. His dogs were healthy , lots of energy , super hunters.
I must be getting old.

Re: Pro Plan Shredded vs. PP regular question
Sharon,
So very true. I never had to worry about a whelping box or where to put it. In all of those years I never lost a pup let alone a litter due to weather. Never had to take one to a vet except for a young female who needed a cecearian(sp) because she was carrying just one oversized puppy. We fed what would be considered a cheap grocery store type feed and never had a problem with a single dog that we had in for boarding, training, or one of our own. During that time we finished a few bench champions and had many many dogs go to hunting homes that would run and hunt all day. And a few were trialed and performed well.
That cheap feed was a great saving as before that feed was available many of the dogs were eating a baby pig creep feed along with what scraps we could find and also quite a bit of corn chewed off of the cob. And a lot of people baked corn bread for their dogs.
So now that we have research and feeding trial results available and so many different ingredients to supply the dogs needs we have thread after thread on most of these boards about whats wrong with all of the dog foods on the market. I will admit some are better than others as they try to fill a different niche of the market but there is not a single one of them that isn't better than what dogs have lived on for all of the years of their domestication.
Luckily, our hunting breeds are still quite self sufficent during the breeding and whelping process and they will stay that way as long as we just stay out of the way and let them do their thing. But when we start thinking we need to be there to help we are taking the first step towards making them dependent on us and also causing problems that would arise otherwise. But it seems to be where everyone is headed and think they are doing their dogs a favor. Sounds like what we are doing with our kids also doesn't it?

Re: Pro Plan Shredded vs. PP regular question
Absolutely. I was teaching a class of 35 kids at age 17. Our thinking is part of a dying breed though. ( Never heard of dogs having cancer in the '50s either. Now we feed them like we feed ourselves and .............. Hmm)
................................................................
Maybe I can tell you about that one litter we lost. Fascinating story.
The bitch was kept in the back half of the wooden garage. A wooden divider and a wooden door made up her kennel bed with an exit to a gravel run.
I kept a dozen rabbits in a hutch back in the far end of our property. ( I was about eight).
One morning I jumped out of bed and ran outside to see if the pups had come.
What a shock!! All the pups were dead and they were covered in dead rabbits.
My dad had forgotten to put on the heat lamp. The bitch had chewed through the wooden door , killed my rabbits and put them on her pups to try and keep them warm.
Talk about a Mother's love...........
That was the only time I ever saw my Dad cry over a dog.

Believe it or not, there is some dirt older than ezzy! However, being over 7 decades old he gets to say things like, "been there - done that" a lot!

Re: Pro Plan Shredded vs. PP regular question
A buddy of mine is in his late 60's and hunts and has always had a Lab or two for bird hunting. I asked him several years ago what he fed. He said Purina Dog Chow. And if it was really cold outside, he would add a spoonful of vegetable oil to the food. His dogs always looked great. I knew he had grown up with dogs so I asked what he remembered feeding from way back when.
He said his grandfather always had hunting dogs that hung around the house. Once per week his grandfather would go to town, and buy rancid corn meal. Once he brought it home, his grandmother would then make cornbread out of the rancid corn meal and they would throw it out for the dogs. Once it was gone it was gone. All they got the rest of the week was any human leftovers (not many) and the food left that humans couldn't eat such as bones and scraps. They also foraged the farm for whatever they could find which probably included animal waste.
My friend described the dogs as "poor" (skinny) but that they survived and hunted.
