Treatment for a injured tail
Treatment for a injured tail
I hunted my 20 mo. old EP this weekend and the second bone from the base is now swollen and is very painful for him - if I touch it or he bumps it on something he yelps. He isn't holding the tail up nor does he wag it. Other than time, is there anything I could or should be doing to help him heal?

I don't know but it sounds like something I would tape for support.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Thanks, all. He was acting kind of puny the day after, but he is back to his normal self - only at half-staff. The area is still swollen and tender, so I am going let it go for a couple more days.

Re: Treatment for a injured tail
when he is resting and his tail is on the floor relaxed, try pinching the tip of the tail to be sure he has feeling all the way down the tail. If not you'd better go to the vet. If so, my money would be on one of these two options. He has fractured his tail, or he injured it and it has developed an abcess or infection.
Also alway a good idea to take his temperature rectally though be careful as it his tail that hurts. Text book regular rectal dog temp it 101.5 F but a little high or low is common if you see 103 ish I'd up the anti on the infection bet.
