Satin Balls

Post by cmmkessler » Mon Dec 22, 2008 8:04 pm

Has anyone fed satin balls to their dog(s)? My male yellow lab was sick for a little bit and is having problems putting weight back on and satin balls are suppose to help aid in putting weight back on. They also said that it is good for their coat. Any information would be appreciated.

Fed Satin balls for almost 6 months this past year. Dogs absolutely loved it, gained weight and kept it on. One dog ate it exclusively, the other one as a supplement.

This diet will definitely put weight on, but I would be careful feeding it exclusively without heavy workouts. As an additive, it's great!

This recipe was taken off a web site. No my own recipe.

Satin Balls - The Original Recipe

The following recipe was sent to Wellpet by Diana Carreon, R.N.,C.

Ingredients:

10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt
Directions:

Mix the ingredients together, like you would a meatloaf. Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.
Thaw as needed and feed raw!
Dogs go crazy over this. It will put weight on the dogs pretty fast if you feed enough. The dogs stop itching and chewing at their coats/skin, it makes their coats soft, their eyes get a bright look and their energy level goes out the roof.

Comments: Per the information received after having the recipe checked by several vets/labs: Satin Balls is a total canine diet. It can be feed by itself or as a supplement, for however long you wish.

Fed it to my old (8 years) Bernese Mountain Dog this Spring/Summer. He has always been a lean dog and I can feel his ribs and backbone no matter what I've fed him. If I feed him too much, he won't eat it all and always stays lean.

I feed twice per day. Every now and then he will go off of his food and miss a meal, sometimes two in a row before eating again. After this went on and off for a week or so this Spring, I decided to give the Satin Ball recipe just posted a try. I used two pounds of hamburger, and cut the recipe by 1/5. I put the satin balls mixture into two quart freezer bags, flattening them out as if I was freezing hamburger.

On one Saturday, he decided to miss his morning meal. So that evening, I gave him half of one packet, feeding him chunks by hand which he gobbled up. I gave him the other half of that pack the next moring. For his evening meal and morning meal the following day, he ate the rest. The next evening, I put him back on his kibble and he went right back to eating and didn't go back to missing meals for several months.

Don't know if he gained weight from that small amount, but it did serve to stimulate his appetite.

This fall he went off again, but I tried something different, Frozen Bil-Jac. It had the same effect.

Red Barn Dog food that is sold in tubes make great training treats, but can be fed as a complete diet. This would probably work too. Dogs go nuts for Red Barn food.

Just thought I'd throw in those other two options which may be more convenient and cost effective if you don't have all of the ingredients on hand.

Fed it to our female when she was pregnant. She loved them and they definitely helped her put on weight.

Red Barn is outstanding food. We used to feed that to our dogs, but it got a bit expensive. Very good food, though.

MikeB had a good recipe but in addition to what he had I added garlic powder and pureed beef liver to mine. Worked ok but I found out that adding lard or shortening over the dogs food worked out better for me and put on weight and kept it on better. That might be something to consider as well. I read an article that stated that the only difference between high priced dog foods and inexpensive ones was fat content and especially the type of fat and they recommended using lard, shortening, or another animal fat based medium like this to add to your dog food if your dog was having problems putting on and keeping on weight. It has made a world of difference in my pointers.

Had to use them to put weight on our boy for the ( ) show ring. The handler wanted my lean, mean, hunting and running machine to gain 5-6 lbs. We did it, but it took some time and lots of those satin balls.

Hey,

I have a Question ?? Would doing a 50-50 mix of ground beef and venison, work ok ? Just thinking on how to better improve if someone wanted to use it on a daily use, I have a Border Collie mix , who gets Nutro Adult and she only eats if I mix in a little can food, I hate canned food , thought I mix some of this in instead, who be lots better for her, just do not need a lot of weight gain .

We did that too and I liked the results better. I have no idea what it does nutritionally, but the results seemed alright for a know-nothing.

The only real difference would be less fat from the venison if that is what you want. It would mean less weight gain.

It equaled more weight gain, because the venison was mixed in with the food he did not want to eat.

That's the catch 22. How do you put weight on a dog that only eats until he is full and wants to RUN everywhere??? You trick him - or get REALLY creative.

Well ,

I think I will mix be up a batch this week end, and see how it goes, Mollie Sue is the Border Collie mix she loves to hunt ducks, water is her best friend , she will jump into the water what ever the temp is so we will give duck hunting try again this year she did good last year as well., She has always been a little lean I just do not want to add to much weight, so will start with the 50-50 mix and see how she does.
