Heat cycle ?

Post by Hunter » Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:47 pm

I have a shorthair that comes in to heat in March and Sept, to most this is not a big deal but for me this is the heart of the field trial season and she misses the majority of the trials because of this. Is thier Any way to change the cycles and also if I was to breed her say in March would that change her cycle pattern after a litter of puppies or would it most likely stay the same. She is just two years old do you think she is too young to breed this fall?

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

A dog that regularly cycles every 6 mos entervals don't change a whole lot but others just can never tell when it's goint to happen,It seems like if you make some kinds of plans they like to mess them up.Breeding at 2 to 2 1/2 yrs for the first time is just about right.

lts just say yes there is some stuff on the market that can change the heat cycles

but side effects can far out way the benefits

My vet refuses to carry the cycle altering drugs that right there says enough for me
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
"When I hear somebody talk about a horse or cow being stupid, I figure its a sure sign that the animal has outfoxed them." Tom Dorrance

My female is just coming out of her second heat cycle. She cycled the first time at 13 months (end of Aug 08). Her second heat didn't start until 20 months (end of March). Both times she came in just after being around uncut males. Some have said the exposure to males is setting off her cycles. But I think part of it is she is just young and will become more regular as she ages.

Ours seem to remain relatively consistent (within a month or so) with the time of year of their cycles. It seems like an awful lot of sporting dogs cycle during the fall hunting season and six months later, messing up hunting and trialing. Agree 2 - 2 1/2 is a reasonable time to start breeding.
