Female House Dog Coming into Heat?

I have female english setter that lives in my house and she will be coming into heat in the next month or two. I will have to deal with her menstruation and think I will be using a "doggie diaper". Have some of you used this type of product before and do any of you have a recommended brand or style for me to look into?

Yep I use them for my bitches. I buy the denim type ones at Petsmart. I've found they are the sturdiest. Just use a hygene pad to line it with.

You will need to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't eat it. I take it off when the bitch is in her crate at night.

We are encountering our first heat cycle with our GSP Mae... we have a pair of "Bitches Britches" and I just bought a pair like what Pam suggested (picked them up tonight from PetCo)... so far we haven't had any trouble with Mae chewing on her britches, but she has managed to get them off a few times... Mae was quite cranky at the end of last week, but didn't seem to have any other "symptoms," until we woke up this morning to a few blood spots... so far it's not as bad as I expected (knock on wood!)... I tried the store bought pants and my dogs chewed them up. I now use little boys underpants with a hole cut for the tail and stick a panty liner inside. My Vizsla wears a size 4 the GSP a size 6.

We have a 2 year old little boy and we have been using his diapers. Normally one lasts almost the entire heat cycle.

I've used the doggie diapers and put a regular hygiene pad as well.

Remember to take it off when the dog out to her business. I forgot once. Not a nice experience.

I used to use the snap on device with the pad, but more recently have gone to using my son's old boxer briefs. Similar to the photo above.

Instead of cutting a hole in the back, we put them on backwards and use the front slit for the tail.

I tried the boys' briefs thing but they wouldn't stay on my bitch. They slid off too easily.

Don't buy the pads that are at PetCo. They're too small and overly expensive.

Get the denim drawers at PetCo then hit Walgreens and just get some standard women's pads. They do a much, much better job.

I'd recommend changing the pads or diapers daily. You're risking infection back there if you leave them on soiled for long periods of time. Warm environment, discharge, inability of bitch to keep herself clean... it all adds up.

Also, if you're going to use women's sanitary pads, get the more basic ones- without the colored centers in the photo on the package. Just in case your dog chews one up... no need to expose her to weird chemicals.

We don't keep our dogs in the house full time, so the only reason we bought the dog diaper things from Foster and Smith (work/fit great) years ago was to a) waste money and 2) provide extra security from unwanted pregs. Anyways, we hardly used them at all.... But I know some who use them for inside dogs in conjunction with pads and they do the job.

My GSP weighs around 58 lbs. She's chewed a few pair but they're much cheaper than the doggie britches and they come in all different patterns. The Vizsla has a really cute camo pair. I buy the cheapest store brand panty liners.
