Assuming the dog hasn't suffered any serious organ damage already from the diabetes : With proper treatment ( insulin, diet , exercise) and monitoring, many diabetic dogs can enjoy an excellent quality of life for many years.
Very similar to humans. My husband is a diabetic. He takes pills on time, regulates his diet and meal size and uses exercise to bring down his blood sugar so his major organs, eyes won't be damaged. Unfortunately pills don't work for dogs. They need the insulin injections.
It takes commitment but it's something you can manage and still enjoy your dog for many years. All the best to you and your dog.

Re: Diabetes
sorry to hear that
for the average house dog they are pretty easy to maintain
we have a couple clients that hunt their diabetic dogs and it is a process for them they take blood count before hunt then let run then rest test blood give injection or some special bars if needed then have to monitor real close for rest of day to make sure dogs doesn't crash as long as you stay on top of it you can do that
bascially for me I would retire the dog and concentrate on your young ones and let him be the spoiled dog and love him for service done and take care of him as long as you can

Re: Diabetes
i have experience with this. I have a 13 year old dog that is diabetic and on insulin. when he was diagnosed he had blood sugar over 430. i was very hesitant to do the insulin but i am glad i did. once you find the right level of insulin and feed it is no problem at all. i check the blood sugar before i feed and give his insulin and feed and it takes about 3-4 minutes, well worth giving a great dog a better life.
i got alot of great advice from many people here on the forum.
