Dog throws up after eating
Dog throws up after eating
My 6 mnth old PP keeps throwing up after eating. She is acting normal, but is more times then not throwing up her food right after eating.
I took her to the vet last Sunday and they shot some xrays to see if any blockage showed up..but nothing showed that they could see. Vet said small intestines filled with lots of gas (black on the xrays). He gave me anti-nausea med's and some antibiotics for a week in case in was a bacteria issue in the digestive track (?)
It's been hit or miss and she hasn't been eating much. Attitude/disposition is good. No fever and solid stool. I did change foods a few days prior to all this starting. She was on Exceed and I started to mix in Pro Plan chicken & rice.
I fed her this morning kibble + 1 cooked egg and it came right up. She still wanted to eat...so I cooked up two more eggs and fed that to her (without the kibble). That stayed down so far.
Has anyone had a reaction like this to a food change?

Re: Dog throws up after eating
would you say she is eating fast and/or gulping the food?

Re: Dog throws up after eating
what kibble is it? Small or large size kibble? brand?
Re: Dog throws up after eating
I wouldn't say she is gulping her food. I've actually used a baking sheet a few times to feed her to see if that was the problem and it didn't matter. I actually did this this morning.
The Pro Plan "All Life Stages" Chicken & Rice kibble is a bit larger in triangle shape, compared to the Excced she was on.
She was originally on Pro Plan Puppy chicken rice (from the breeder) prior to going to Exceed.

i think i would make sure the food is soaked very well before she eats and maybe get the dog a decent probiotic suplement if it keeps up, also try mixing a little whole milk plain yogurt in the kibble maybe that will help...
did she keeps the eggs down? eggs seem to stay down no matter how the dogs feels in my experience same with white rice and yogurt
my moms spaniel was a chronic regurgitator until he started eating wet foods. he is nervous as a cat though

my older brit used to throw up almost every meal but would eat it right back up and keep it down the second time. vet could do nothing for us, they checked everything off the list physically so i wasn't too concerned. about a year later i sent her off for training and she hasn't had a problem throwing up since. the trainer said it was most likely a result of having too much energy built up and not knowing how to control it therefore making her nervous and causing her to vomit. she will still vomit if you give her cold water or ice. i feel your pain, she was an indoor dog at the time and it was horrible eventhough she did her best to help us clean up

better than diarrhea though

I have a lab that used to do the same thing. Put the dog's food bowl up on a small box or some other means of elevating the food. I also put a good sized rock in his bowl with the food...it slows him down and doesn't let him wolf it.

Raising the feed is an excellent idea. Helps with several potential problems.azhunter wrote:I have a lab that used to do the same thing. It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Interesting that you state this...as I believe the Purdue study on bloat said not to raise bowl....I'll try to find the section on this and post up.ezzy333 wrote:Raising the feed is an excellent idea. "Increasing age, increasing thorax depth/width ratio, having a first degree relative with a history of GDV, a faster speed of eating, and using a raised feed bowl, were associated with an increased incidence of GDV."
"Most of the popular methods currently recommended to prevent GDV did not appear to be effective, and one of these, raising the feed bowl, may actually be detrimental in the breeds studied"

Maybe the pup needs to go back to several times a day feeding or even more than nomal say 4 times to keep the meals very small.

I'd be getting the liver enzyme levels checked.

Re: Dog throws up after eating
I had this issue with one of my dogs when he was 6 years old. Undiagnosed by the vet and the dog was losing weight, etc. As a last resort before going to the specialist clinic, we did a round of Panacur and the vomiting of food stopped. Result was a diagnosis that there was some kind of worm not showing up that was causing GI problems.
