So I discovered some swelling on Tundra's nose yesterday. It is all bumpy and looks like little pimples but no puss or anything comes out of them. This morning they are open soars. They have a raw look to them. They don't seem to be bothering her like it itches or anything and her breathing is normal. Any thoughts? Unless it gets MAJORLY worse like covering her entire face or her breathing is effected I am going to wait til Monday to take her to the vet. I gave her some Benedryl last night but it didn't seem to help. Thoughts?

Might give a couple Benydryl couple times a day. Looks like a bite or reaction to something.

Thanks Brenda. That is what I was thinking too. Now I just have to look up how much benedryl to give her. I only gave her 25 mg. last night as I wasn't sure. She only weights like 35 lbs.

1 mg per pound (two tablets for a 50 lb dog)

didn's read the whole post obviously. Give her 1 and a half tablets 2x day, and if she won't lick it off put some cortisone cream on it 3x day today. Vets will give higher dose of benedryl for more severe reactions but I am not going to advise it. Most of my girls have been lickers and nothing their tongue can reach will stay on without an ecollar which won't help that spot(no amount of hot sauce or bitter spray or whatever matters, it's foreign and they are licking it off!)

I tried putting neosporin on it this morning to make sure that infection isn't setting in. But I wonder if she is licking it off or pawing it off as the soars are open even more than this morning. One person actually asked me if it were possible she had gotten herpies on her nose. But she hasn't been off our property in like a month so I HIGHLY doubt that. Is that possible?

do you have sheep? whatever it is keep the sun off it till the Dr. sees it and after as well. you live down south could she have gotten into fire ants?
does she have any in the mouth?

I had a dog for what ever reason stick her nose in an under ground yellow jacket nest, looked very similar only much worse.

insect bites for sure - bees? - ouch I had an encounter with bees. They can give you MANY bites in a quick second or two.

There aren't any fire ants in Michigan........

It looks like she got into something that repeatedly stung her on the nose. But that would hurt her.

Has she been rubbing her nose on anything plastic?

almost looks like juvenile cellulitis

is it getting any worse?

If it is get her on predinsone right away and some antibiotics to prevent any possible infection

Cellulitis is usually a bacteria treatable by antibiotics. Not sure what it is, but it also looks like a pattern of mites, but I think that would itch. I guess that's one purpose for Vets..

I hope some of our resident vets do chime in!

She only rubs or licks at it after I put something on it. It is sore to the touch if I touch it. I was reading on Juvenile Cellulitis and it was saying it is something that is in puppys. Tundra is almost 3. So I would doubt that would be it. The hubby is working right now on blocking off the deck so she can't go under it any longer. The swelling is not getting worse at this point. It has oozed more and become more raw but I think that is because I put neosporine on it and she was licking it and pawing at it to get that off. So I don't think I will put anything else on it but keep doing the benedryl. I know also she doesn't have mites. Unless a mite can live under her skin then of course there would be no way for me to know for sure. Her breathing is still not hindered and she is not acting out of sorts as far as personality wise goes.

Oh also no sheep.

Some chickens, pheasant and horses but not in the fenced in back yard she has access to.

there are mites in the hair follicles, demodectic mites, that live normally in balance. sometimes they get out of hand, are there other areas on her body where there is hair loss or iritation? around the eyes, neck, mouth?

i have never heard of that condition getting so bad so fast though but I am sure your vet will do a scraping.

There are no other areas that are being effected or look patchy on her skin at all. Just that spot on her nose. So sounds like bug bites is the answer at this point. But what kind and how to treat it is another question....

That doesn't look like mites to me. It looks almost like a Staph infection. But what it is caused by who knows.

I had several dogs that had that same type of thing last year at just about time of year. It was under their chins though.I put them all on a course of Cephalexin and it clear it right up.

Those look suspiciously like what I heard called "puppy pimples". Both of my dogs get them occasionally, but they are generally around the lips and the underside (tip) of their bottom jaw. I've never seen them on top of the nose. Mine generally just get one or two at a time and never quite the mass that yours has. The first time one of my pups got some, we rushed to the vet and got antibiotics and the vet told us to be sure and use a stainless steel pan. They told us they see them fairly regularly and usually much worse, but that ensuring the food/water dishes are stainless and washed regularly usually will keep them at bay. Since then I don't worry too much when I see them, I just make sure the water/food dishes are getting washed everytime they are used and they clear up on their own. You might want to do an internet search on "puppy pimples"...seems like there was quite a bit of info out there...

this time of year even the littlest skin problem can get out of hand for no apparent reason. I'd say it 50/50, bug bites gone infected or a bacterial infection.

I cant tell you what it is, but i have seen it before. Usually i treat it with a topical ointment that has an antibiotic, an antifungal, and a steroid in it. The vast majority of the time, the "shotgun approach" clears it up!!

Dog Dr.,,,, would Preperation H and an athletes foot cream do the trick if that is all you had available at the time? Or would it atleast be worth a shot?

witnessed one of my dogs getting stung by a wasp and she kept going back for more..... looked EXACTLY like that but it only appears to be half the number of times. looked pretty bad at first and thought she might have a reaction so i kept an eye on it for the remainder of the evening, didn't get any worse so just left it alone. that was last sat, it is still not completely healed but it looks a lot better and should be gone in a couple days.

the wasps must be really active now for some reason, my son got stung 12 times this weekend..the brown wasps..never an issue only yellow jackets

Here is an updated pic(warning not for a weak stomach). Our vet couldn't get us in until Tuesday AM. But if there is something that I can buy that would help treat an infection side of things from the store. I really don't htink it is something more sivere than being bit by a bug or bugs and now it is infected as none of our other dogs have had any symptoms. She had a bump on Thursday but I just figured it was a bug bite. Then Saturday night some of these red spots popped up. Sunday it looked like this later in the afternoon. This is what it looks like today. Now the soars are worse but the swelling on the rest of her nose is gone. We will see what the vet has to say in the AM. I am almost 100% positive that this is an alergic reaction as none of our other dogs are showing any signs at all of having any of this. We are giving her the proper dosage of benedryl along with putting peroxide on it at least 3 times a day to keep infection out and hopefully try to help dry it out. I will keep you all posted. But Here is a pic from today.

Peroxide bubbles. It doesn't hurt. Just like putting it on your own open wounds. I can tell it doesn't hurt her honestly. She could care less that I am putting it on her.

Peroxide usually is NOT recommended as it also kills new skin cells. You may want to stay with a betadine type solution, if anything. JMO!

Thanks! He is out of CH The Valedictorian X Trail's End Boom bred by Jerry Myers in Oklahoma. He is about 1 year old and doing great.

Just an fyi for people /dogs. Peroxide should never be used in an OPEN wound. Only for abrasions. Straight from the live-in doctor's mouth.

Yep As nitrex said it kills off new skin cell growth.

You could end up creating a terrible scar on your dog's nose. I would just wash it with antibacterial soap.

Well my vet agreed that the short term of using peroxide for 24 hours was better than using nothing. So I am ok with the fact that I used it. Better to work on killing off bad bacteria for the first 24 hours than do nothing. But anyway. The vet did give her a steroid shot and put her on anti-biotics. So we should be on the road to healing.

Not 100% sure. Could have been a bug bite that become infected or a cut that got infected. Hard to tell for sure.

Just saw the pic and it is identical to what one of mines nose looked like when she stuck her nose in a jellowjacket nest. Took about three weeks to heal up real well but no pemanent damage.

I am a little late getting in on this discussion but wanted to see what has happened in the last couple of weeks. Near the end of last summer, my 1 year old gsp had the same thing. It broke out on the nose almost overnight in the exact same place your pictures show. We treated it with a 4 in 1 cream which appeared to do nothing. After 3 weeks on the cream and with no change, we gave up. As her nose dried out, the condition improved. It took a month or so before the hair started to grow back and she seems to have had no long term scarring or side effects. From the description of LD, that could not have been the condition or she would be dead by now. Our vet seemed to think it could have been a fungal infection due to the incredibly wet summer we had last year. Right now it still seems to be a mystery but I would love to know exactly what caused this. My other GSP, who she has a lot of contact with, did not have the same problems. We did not do the steroid treatments so I'm not sure how much this would have helped.

I posted this same response on the other Nose Problem topic and yours looks the same. If I could have taken pictures of my dog, they would have looked exactly the same. I know several folks have suggested bug bites but that would seem to be to coincidental for three dogs from different places to have the same thing... maybe not??

I think you're right, and I think it could be something in the food. Maybe a level of nutrition inadequate for this dogs individual needs, but suffice for your other dogs, being the others show no reaction. Maybe incorporate a bit more meat and fat into the diet in hopes to strengthing the immune system, giving a stronger ability for the dog to fight off the allergic reacation. Otherwise, you're going to be chasing this thing around with drugs looking for a fix when that could very well be masking the real problem of inadequate level of nutrition for this dog? Pay attention to areas like fiber and carbs and seek to lower them, while at the same time boost the animal source proteins and fat content. Good luck.

Sorry I didn't see this thread come back up! This was last year 2009 that this happened. She had been put on Clavamox and it cleared right up. No true answer to what exactly it was. Hard to say for sure. It never did come back.
