Eye Care When In The Field

Post by High Brass » Thu Nov 05, 2009 8:36 am

We are planning on spending about a week in Kansas hunting soon. Can anyone help with ideas for daily eye care? Eye washes, eye drops, or other ideas for normal eye care after hunting heavy cover. We also need ideas for an English pointer who ussually finishes the day with a bloody tail tip when in heavy cover all day.
Thanks

I normally will carry a small bottle of Walgreens eye wash to flush out debris and soothe the eyes : http://img.walgreens.com/dbimagecache/3 ... x220_a.jpg

I also have a couple of small tubes of Puralube eye lubricant. http://www.petnutritionproducts.com/Pur ... p-632.html
Mostly it's just Mineral oil, but works very well for extremely dry irritated eyes. Just pull the lower lid down creating a pocket and lay a strip in there followed by a light massage to spread it around.

As far as the tail I would get some EMT Gel. Also nice to have a tin of Bag Balm handy as well.

we use regular OTC visine drops. What ever is available at Walmart or the local drugstore. Every time there is a break the dogs get drops put in.

Our vet recommended to us for ears:
Corn starch or flour with a little water to help stop bleeding

I am sure it would work on a tail and it is ok if the dog licks it. Not a long term fix but a quick fix in the field.

I would stick with a basic eye wash and would avoid Visine. Visine is not therapeutic and only constricts the blood vessels in the eye to make it appear less red. It's a quick fix that only addresses appearance.

Visine is the brand name. They have many different types of drops to choose from. We have the sterile saline drops that are put in at each break to keep eyes moist and the gel to use at the end of the hunt.

I have seen an antihistamine type drop that can be used if there is itching/watering, the sterile saline, the gel, an antibiotic type (more like neosporin drop).

But always check with vet if unsure. If there is any chance of an ulcer or abrasion on the lens some drops do more damage than good.

no 'Visine' type eye drops according to my dog's eye doctors............just use a saline wash, and drops called "GenTeal".........my Boykin has an eye problem, and that is what I was directed to use by the docs at Ohio State vet clinic..........
