H3N8 Canine Flu

Post by wannabe » Wed Sep 30, 2009 10:46 am

Has anyone seen this yet? The vet caught me off guard today and sold me enough vaccines for the whole kennel. I am going to be traveling, hunting, and competing with dogs from the Georgia area this Fall, so $150 is pretty cheap insurance if it keeps the gang healthy through the season.

Are you located in Alabama, near the Florida cases? Anyone know how far this virus has spread since the study period?

We've heard absolutely nothing about this down here in Tampa. Plus one of our GSP chapter members is in a vet's office, so I'd think she'd be quick to get the word out if this was a widespread problem. Nevertheless, I'll contact her & see what she says...

First vaccination was approved last summer.

I called a hunting buddy from Atlanta to see if he knew anything about the virus. He called 5 vets in the area and none of them had the vaccine or had treated a case of H3N8. I am supposed to go pick up the boosters tomorrow, but now I am wondering whether my vet is ahead of the game or just overreacting.

One way the vets make money of course is from vaccinations. Remember though, when a new disease hits not all drs or vets recognize it right away. So it could be going around undiagnosed/unrecognized. On the other hand according to what I read the mortality rate is quite low. It's up to you ... are you a gambler ... or would you rather be safe than sorry?

If it's an older dog or one with a compromised immune system , I would definately get it done.

Ok... contacted the breeder & she indicated that It is not a core vaccine & only recommended for dogs at risk (shelters etc). Also just where locally indicated. Thus she's not using it.

FWIW,

I have heard of some cases in KY and TN.

I'm wondering if I should get my dogs vaccinated. I frequently pull rescue dogs from local shelters although I won't be doing so for a while as my bitch may be pregnant.
