Anyone have any experience with older dogs losing teeth?

Yes my jacks lived to very old ages and I had a few lose teeth. Never a canine though and the dogs were fine otherwise, just old.

Why?

I noticed to-night that my 12 year old Jack Russell has 3 very loose teeth. I'd been wondering if he had some pain but thought it was arthritis which it may still be.
I'm assuming some kind of peridontal disease if teeth are falling out.( Feeling guilty I didn't brush his teeth more often.)I know peridontal disease can affect major body organs.
Wondering if I leave them or have them pulled.
Calling the vet to-morrow. I'm surprised my vet missed this as the dog had his physical 4 weeks ago.

PS Terriers commonly live to 17 years of age. If he lives that long he'll be gumming it. :)

Your dog is probably young enough for dental work mine were too old for anesthesia. Jack's are known for bad teeth as are many small dogs. Are they tartared up? Breath stinky?

I never found brushing did a thing.

I believe brushing keeps the tartar off and peridontal disease is avoided. I brush my dog's teeth.

Dog is going in for surgery to-morrow ($ 400.00). He's having 4 teeth out and the molars cleaned while he's there.

Turns out a dog fight he was in, caused the loose teeth.
I have had a very happy 35 year marriage but my husband can be very stupid.

Last week he saw a friend of his out on the sidewalk with a new dog.
HE INVITED THEM IN.
I was sleeping.

The two females backed off but a JRT doesn't back off. It's his house.
Big fight, I jumped out of bed in my nightie and separated them

Sadly these folks had just bought the JRT from the newspaper. It was a vicious buggar - their first dog. They asked me how to control it. ( I only can think of one solution. :)

I told my husband that he is paying the vet bill.

That's what I thought too until I saw the vet and she put 2 and 2 together for me.

Pliers are only a few dollars Sharon...should have done it yourself. :D  I do feel bad for the dog. I guess he'll be treated to soft food for a while.

Itg's bad enough to get the lecture at the dentist for not flossing enough, now I have to get the lecture at the vets for not brushing 3 dogs' teeth. In many ways the old days were so simple. :)

He's in slow motion but he's fine.
I love this old dog ; he breaks me up.
His habit is to check all the wastebaskets in the house for empty toilet paper rolls. ( A little soft card board is better then raw hide i figure.)

I just noticed that he has 4 of them in his bed. He can't chew to-night so i guess he's saving them up for to-morrow. Too funny. :)

My older dog had an abcessed tooth (molar) which had to be removed. Now most of his back teeth are ground down to hardly anything. He has always been a chewer, lots of bones etc..

Ever try to put antibiotic gel on the TOP teeth of a dog? ( I don't see the point as he licks it off immediately.)

Get four empty toilet paper rolls (from you know where), flatten them out, placed them stacked between the teeth after you apply the antibiotic, wrap vet wrap around the top and bottom jaws .. that'll keep the tongue off the antibiotic for a while!
