Looking for Vet in Northeast KS

Post by buckwildbirddogs » Tue Dec 29, 2009 7:51 pm

Does anyone know of a very good, responsible, reasonably priced Vet in north east KS???

We have been using K-State for most of our dogs care. But it would be nice to have a close-to-home vet for an ER case. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Personally I use my local vet, reasonable prices, always available, and knows what he is doing. He is in Hiawatha, Animal Health Center 785-742-7255. It is a father and son operation. Dad concentrates on the large animal and Stacey does all the small animal stuff. I do most of all the vetting myself and don't often have a need and I've haven't lost a patient yet  . You might be suprised how much YOU can do yourself. How often were you sending dogs to KSU? Is there not a competent vet within 20 minutes of you? Have you checked out the vets close to you?

I wouldnt send dogs to KSU unless their were some problems that my local vet couldnt figure out. Even then the dog better be REALLY worth it since KSU isnt cheap! Dont get me wrong, they are the BEST at what they do but there arent many dogs that are worth that kind of care.

They are more reasonable than one might think. We had one dog awhile back that had to go to the optometry specialtist and they ran all the tests and an office visit (gave him a good look over) for $125.

We do all our OFA and CERF testing there.
We do our own puppy shots, wormer.

We had been taking all dogs to a local vet once yearly for annual exams, rabies (when needed), annual 7-way, kennel cough, new heartgaurd Rx. But lately this particular vet has done some things that we do not agree with and become unreliable and unpredictable. They are not very willing to answer our questions or take the time with our dogs that we believe they should. When we do have an ER situation they are not easily available so we go to K-State (which is a drive).

So any recommendations would be appreciated. We have been checking out some of the other local vets but we get conflicting stories from people we have talked to. Most have "pets" or "house dogs" not working bird dogs that we have talked to. And we are just trying to get some opinions from people that have similar dogs to ours.

I use Animal Health Center in Hiawatha and would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Stacey Groth, 785-742-7255. It is a Father/Son team and the son is about 26 or so and he takes care of all the small animal side of the practice. VERY reasonable, easy to get hold of, and knowledgeable. If you give them a call let them know I sent you! Good luck!

Don't know where in NE KS you are located but Floyd Dorsey in Emporia does good work. Hunts and has dogs himself.
