Car Sick Dog

Post by Odin » Wed Feb 17, 2010 7:38 am

Anyone ever use Gravol on dogs for trips? I've heard you can give them a dose suitable for children without harming them.Or is there something dog specific that I can get from my vet? I have a 3 hour drive I have to take this week and hopefully I can find something to make him feel better for the trip. Hopefully it is something he grows out of, I think it has a lot to do with him being nervous in the truck. Thanks.

My mother has a King Charles Spaniel that pukes at the sight of a car or plane. She uses an herbal powder with valerian and ginger and its helps quite a bit. Valerian is a potent herb so if you use it buy from a reputable source and specifically for dogs. Ginger is quite good for settling the stomach.

I have found a small crate where the dog has to laydown helps a lot by making them feel secure. There are things the vet can give you that work wonders too.

I get quickly carsick on any moving item except a horse.
I discovered that if I'm driving I'm fine.
Why? Because if you can see the horizon, down the road, your inner ear is balanced.
On a bus, I get that seat right behind the driver so I can see down the road.

I put any dogs prone it illness in the top cage - 3 in the back of the van , one up high. It solves the nausea problem. I don't want to give my dogs Dramamine when going to a trial. The drowsiness ensures a lack lustre performance.

I've given children's Gravol and it worked for a 11 hr trip with my girl when she was very prone to car sickness. She was fine the whole trip. Just my $0.02
