Brittany Puppies Birth Weights?

Post by Grange » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:33 pm

My parent's female brittany gave birth to 8 puppies today. All puppies were weighed and they ranged between about 9.5 oz. and 10.8 oz. The sire's birth weight was substantially less at 6.4 oz. according to the info. my father has so I am wondering what the brittany breeders here usually see as far as birth weights. This was the females first litter.

That is about average for most litters I have found on certain foods that birth weights can be a bit more specially feeds that are highly digestible some of my litters will average 10-12 oz

Also how many in the litter and size of female also has a variance to puppy size

You can vary the weight of the pups by overfeeding the last trimester when most of the weight gain takes place. I have no idea what the pups weigh but I would much rather have smaller pups that are born easily with little stress to the pups or the dam. I just never weighed any since there was nothing you could change after they are here.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Those would be heavy pups by our litters. Most around the 8 oz mark.

Just another perspective: my small bitch 18"/27 lbs.(normal weight) just whelped a healthy litter of 7 on 3/25/10, the smallest was 10.8 and the largest was 12.5oz. I was expecting a little smaller as well, since she was the runt of her litter only weighing in at 7.2 oz. I fed my dam as much as she wanted the last 3 weeks including whole fat goat yogurt, rice, boiled chicken and eggs in addition to puppy kibble. She had no trouble delivering the pups, she only pushed with the first one, the rest arrived without much help from her. :)

I don't weigh at birth. Instead I wait until the pups are about 7-10 days old, at which time (10 days) they are about 16-20 oz.
