Hair thinning on head

Post by KNFriss » Wed May 01, 2013 9:06 pm

So we made another trip to the vets office for hair patches thinning on my 1 year old gsp..he told us that it wasn't mange and just a bacterial infection. Since the antibiotic cream (Neosporin) didn't make the thinning any worse he asked that we continue using the Neosporin for another 10 days. I'm concerned there is more, since after stopping the cream the thinning returned and with more patches.
Are bacterial infections common and what other things could be causing thinning?

Could be a form of a staff infection? You might try a round of antibiotics. For $12 bucks it may be worth a try.

Check thyroid -- use Vetericyn in the meantime.

+2. Not only a skin scrape of the head area but between the toes and a couple other places on the dog as well.

They have done 2 scrapes of the area, and nothing was there.

When you have the dog's Thyroid tested, make sure they do a "full thyroid panel" and not just T4.

Nothing showed with my dog's scrapings either, but the vet put her on Advantage Multi 55 anyways - covers a wide variety of possible parasites- and the problem cleared up after two applications ( 8 weeks).

Dog does not seem to be itching, some of the hair has grown back.
