What dog food are you using currently?

Post by Hondo » Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:31 pm

I would like to know what dog foods fellow board members are feeding their dogs.

I know that anything dog food related seems to be a hot button topic, so I'm not looking for what people think is the best food. I just would like to know what brands and specic type (i.e. performance, maintanance, etc.) your are feeding your dogs.

I realize that cost, availability, activity level, age of dog, etc., play a role in why you may be feeding the dog food that you are. If you want to qualify your answer by explaining why you are feeding the food that you are feel free to let us know. I just don't want to start a which feed is the best debate. No one ever wins :)

Thanks in advance,

Hondo

All are doing well

Loyall Active Adult. It's a formula similar to the Performance which can serve as an all-age formula, plus it will suffice for nearly any work level.

We Feed Exceed Chicken & Rice 30-20.

All the dogs do really well.

with a couple of strange things out of the 10 dogs on it. 3 dogs end up with green stools firm but green,
My 2 Foster Weims go from Green to brown on any given day. firm stool. The other 5 do really really well all stools normal in color & all firm.

I do not under stand the color change, this stuff does not give any of them gas- Diamond of any sort gives them gas a cockroach would run from.

We have feed Nutro and all did well. but by far the best for my money & cause I foster alot. Exceed is the food I buy.

In the off season to adult dogs:
-- Diamond Maintanence

While Training, hunting, trialing to adult dogs:
-- Diamond High Protein

To pups up to at least 12-16months:
-- Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy

When it gets really cold and dogs won't eat as much, or are working unusually hard and not keeping adequate weight/stamina/etc:
-- Mix in with the regular food at 2:1(regular:Extreme) ratio: Diamond Extreme Athlete (we do not have to resort to this very often though)

I also like the 4Health line of dog good at TSC. Works well. Just as good as the Diamond. But a little higher in price.

Innova EVO Turkey & Chicken. Since switching to this food about a year ago our dog has put on muscle, has a better coat, and a lot less "output". Another reason we chose it was because of the high protein content (about 43%).

The original poster asked everyone to just list what they were using without comment other than what you liked about your feed as I remember. Your comment does not conform to that request and would be nothing but your opinion since you have not fed everything out there and do not know everything that is out there.

Glad you like it but I think anyone can plainly see that the difference in dog food is pretty much what everyone likes and there sure isn't any one best feed and there are probably very few poor ones since someone is still using each and like it.

I believe we have some one feeding about every major brand in the country and their dogs are doing well on it. The whole world can't be wrong, can it? I don't think so.

I'm greatful for everyone that has posted a reply. I'm glad everyone has kept this thread from being a which feed is best competition.

I appreciate the person who posted about the BARF diet that they use, but that doesn't apply to this thread.

The variety of feed being used by different people around the country is very informative. It definitely shows that dogs can be successful being feed many different kinds of food.

I forgot to post what I was feeding my dog. I was feeding her Costco Kirkland Signature Chicken & Rice adult dog food 26/16. I was having a terrible time with loose stools. My pup is currently spending 6 weeks with a trainer and they feed Loyall Active Adult dog food. I think I will switch to that and see how she does once I bring her home next month.

Sportsman's Pride Premium Adult 26/18. Just recently switched to this from Pro Plan Original Chicken and Rice 26/16. Reason was cost. Sportsman's Pride was cheaper, just as convenient to purchase, and came in a larger bag. Early results are positive.

Native level 3. The first few months I had some trouble with it giving my dogs gas. That problem has been taken care of and the dogs are doing quite well on it now. I am guessing that a few others had the problem also and Native made some change to address the problem.
I feed Native because the dogs are doing well with it, it is reasonably priced easy to find for me and they seem to be major sponsors at many sporting/hunting events.

Hondo,
Here at Pine Creek Grouse Dog Trainers we feed Exceed Chicken & Rice from Sams $29.00 for 40 Lbs during hunting season. We also feed the Diamond Large Breed Puppy food to our pups. I also like the Dianond Large Breed dog food $32.00 for 44 lbs thru my Vet.
I just started adding Sport Dog Pork and Rice, from NH to the Exceed in the off season, to help keep my kennel feed cost down. Its a 28/18 food with all the goodies,
cost me 19.95 for a 40lb bag, right now, buy one get one free, its a new company and they want to develope a client list.

Love it.Both of my dogs look and do great on it. And they are different in age, size, etc. I highly recommend.. Easy to find and a great food. Of course some people feel they won't have the energy w/o the grains but I disagree.

Has anyone had any experience with Dads Dog Food? We fed it to our lab for 14 years with no problems. The vet told us he was in perfect health and his diet added years onto the end of his life... We live in a rural area and some brands are not available with out a trip...

I'm sure many dogs do well on Dad's as they do on Ol'Roy, but in this day and age, I would rather have a feed with some sort of meat product as the first ingredient. Ground Yellow Corn is fine, but not as the first ingredient unless you have say three good meat ingredients after it.
