I have a 16 week old pup and she eats so fast she chokes and vomits full kibbles. Any idea how to slow her down?

Spread it out on a cookie sheet, it'll slow her down. Mine has the opposite problem, she just grazes...

Use a muffin pan. Distribute the kibble in each muffin cup.

Does putting a couple of balls in a normal dog pan work? I've heard about it, but never seen it done.

Not saying that it does work, but if it does, I'd think that a lacrosse ball would be just right. They are hard, heavy and seem to taste bad to dogs (at least to mine).

Never tried it Greg, could they break a tooth on a Lacrosse ball?

Try this..........

I use a river stone about that size. It works well since it is heavy and the dogs have to eat around it.

Nah. They are a really dense rubber. Harder than a kong, but not like a pool ball. None of mine have liked to chew on them, either.

If you look online, they can be gotten for like $1 each. The shipping eats you alive, though. Not an issue around my house as I buy a case of 120 every year for the kids.

Ezzy is right about the rock in the bowl, I had a lab I did the same thing. I have heard of the muffin pan also but never tried it. They also sell bowls with a center obstruction built right in.

I've use the BreakFast bowl and one that Academy sells as well...they slow them down but the best thing for me is the cookie sheet. It works the best as they end up chasing the food around and getting smaller bites. For my GSP, I would not introduce anything else he could put in his mouth such as a ball or rock.

I had the same problem with mine. I just bought a bowl with the ridges that extend almost to the center. It slowed him waaaayyyy down. He never even gets through the whole bowl in 1 sitting anymore. It makes them work for the food a little.

We just put a kong in a smaller bowl so she can't get his mouth around it too easily. Works great. Never heard of the cookie sheet... That's cool 8)

I used heavy coffee cups turned upside down in the bowl, worked for me.

If the above ideas don't work for you, you can buy him an "egg" toy. You put the kibble in the egg (like a hamster ball) and the dog noses the egg around until the kibble falls through the hole. It slows them down a ton and they have to "work" for their food. Another one like that is the "tug-a-jug" toy. Same concept.

I bought my Vizsla a Nina Ottoson (sp?) dog bone puzzle game and hide the food in there for him. He loves it. But it doesn't fit as much as one of the jugs or the eggs.

Use smaller sized dog food. The smaller bites makes them take longer to slurp up and since they're already small, there's less of a chance it getting stuck on the way down.

No No, the larger the kibble the slower they eat. I bought small bags of Royal Canin Maxi & Giant for treats and my dogs eats on piece at a time.

The problem is kibble keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Large breed kibbles are your best bet.

Steve has a dog smarter than he is. No wonder he can't train a dog or that the dog has a better figure than he does. :P  !

Have you ever seen the mouth on a Lewellen? Or the lips? Kind of think just maybe McBosco was poking a little fun at Steve, which he deserves. :) Or have you seen a Spinone?

I was poking fun at Steve and the little critters.

I have a good recommendation for dogs that eat too fast or gulp, apart from muffin tins, cookie sheets, etc.

Put the dog on one of the Royal Canin kibbles for Large Breed Dogs called Maxi or the Labrador formula. I GTY the dog will learn a lesson. I bet after a month the dogs stops.

The kibble sizes are like something out of The Flintstones. I bought a bag for treats and even my dog eats one piece at a time.

I basically freefeed my 45# male Llewellin Setter. He has a pen connected to the front of a small building, so the extra feed left out does not get wet. I feed about every three days. He eats what he needs, and does not gorge at all. Try that with your stubtails! :D

In addition to the slow eating bowl, another way to slow them down is to add water. It helps keep them hydrated during hunting season and slows down their eating. I feed mine 2c of food w/ 4c of water.

I have friends that have used the upsided down coffee cup in the bowl method. they have had success with it. Of couse there have been plenty of other very fine ideas mentioned here. Any of which would work I'm sure.

That sounds like a really good idea. I've been trying to figure out how to get my dog to hydrate before a long day.

He doesn't need to drink a lot before hunting. And I don't like to wet their feed since it changes the digestion and also tend to leave a lot of tarter on the teeth.

Could have done that with my britt without a problem, but with my lab around that was not an option, he would have looked like a beach ball.My 11 week old WPG is now eating 3 cups a day and acts like he is starving every time I feed him, the cookie sheet drives him nuts.
