GSP losing hair on his tail.

Post by Upland Point » Fri Dec 31, 2010 10:10 am

I have a 3 year old GSP. I purchased him when he was 10 months old, when i purchased him he had already lost some hair around the tip of his tail. It has been getting worse as he ages. Any thoughts on a lotion or cream that I can apply to try to grow his hair back?

Not that I know of.

The important thing is to figure out why he is losing hair, not just treat the symptom.

Is there hair loss anywhere else?

On the tip only, not down the ridge? That's not uncommon, depending on the technique used to dock the tail. Wear and tear will destroy the hair follicles. I have seen quite a few like that. They tend to rub the tip of their tail when they sit, for one thing.

I was thinking the same thing CC now if it goes all the way down or starts moving down could be something else but if it's scar tissue from tail docking not likely to come back.

When I purchased him he was really red under his chest and always scratching at himself. I brought him into the vet's office and they performed a skin scrape to diagnose the problem. They said he had an allergic reaction to something. Since then all of his redness has cured but the hair on his tail never grew back. The Vet also said in order for his hair to grow back that they would have to scrape all the scar tissue to allow for new hair to grow.

I've used this on elbow scruff with good results.

The first product on the menu, the ointment, is what I used. It is an effective debriding product and the hair follicles weren't damaged.

I would love to see a photo of this tail. If the hair loss is getting worse and it is symmetrical I would rule out something endocrinological.
