Spaying a female in heat?
Spaying a female in heat?
I have my female scheduled to be spayed this Wednesday. She came into season today, five days prior to the scheduled surgery. I know it can be done, but is a little more complicated. Just weighing whether to go ahead or not. Any opinions or prior experiences are appreciated.

I had hoped that a vet would jump in here... I would call your vet tomorrow morning and see what he/she says, but if it were my dog I would wait. Things inside are swollen and blood engorged, better to wait until she is out of heat and the risks go down.

If there aren't health issues leading to the spaying why would anyone opt for higher risks in a voluntary procedure that can be rescheduled, unless your schedule cannot be shifted around?

No health issues. However, I do have a 10 month old intact male. And I need to do something. These are pets and they are in an out of the house and in the back yard together. I don't have a good way to keep them separated. I didn't think she would be in heat for at least three weeks. Just bad timing or poor planning. Either way, it is what it is. Just talked with the vet's office and they said they can go ahead with the procedure.

shouldnt be a problem. just a little more blood for the vet to deal with. it is kind of a pain in the neck, though, so he might charge you a little extra.

Everything went smoothly and she seems to be back to her old self already.
