Question on hip Xray

Post by yetinme » Mon Jan 03, 2011 5:11 pm

My little girl just turned two and based on today's hunt is progressing nicely. When we got her we were looking for a good family dog and hunting dog but were not interested in breeding her and have since had her fixed. We did do research and both parents and they had good hip ratings but now we are wondering if we should have here hips checked. We don't see any signs of problems but will spend the $170 if there is some upside but won't if there isn't an upside. My question is, if they Xray her does it change anything if they do or don't find bad hips. Do they have any treatments that are done for early diagnonsis or do they just tell you to keep the weight down (should anyway)?

Thanks a ton.

BTW - The empties are not all mine. I wish people would pick up their empties. In about 2 hours I picked up over 50 empties.

I wouldn't bother having her done unless there was some guarantee from the breeder that you want to take advantage of. You will find out in time if she has a problem but there is not much you can do to change things.

Boy, I sure agree people letting their empties lay. If you get in an area where there is a lot of shooting it sure gets messy. Bet I pick up 20 or 30 everytime I am out and that doesn't make a dent in it.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Breeder would give me $375 (1/2 of cost) back if I returned the dog. I figure the divorce and counseling for the kids that hate their dad that gave away their dog would probably be more expensive

Having her xrayed will giver your breeder an idea of what he produced is good.... or if there are problems. If you want to contribute to the breed in general- get it done so she can be added to the database.
It will cost you, but without contributions from our owners we breeders have no way of knowing what we have put out there.

If the xrays are good... no worries. If the xrays show any sort of problem you will have a heads up for her future. Since she is not going to reproduce she can't pass it on, good or bad, but she and you can contribute to the future.

For sure, up to you.

If you have no plans to breed your dog and/or no plans to return the dog to the breeder, which you do not, - there is no reason to do hip radiographs. The variability in how Vets read xrays is high. I had one orthopedic specialist tell me my dog had a left hip with a "poor rating" but OFA results came back as good. My old dog (12) had hip rads done when she had surgery for a torn CCL. Again, I was told she had a dysplastic left hip yet 3 yrs later absolutely no signs of any osteoarthritis.

Keep her fit (on the skinny side), in condition and worry about arthritis if it happens. Some people proactively give joint supplement (Dasuquin, Cosequin, Glycoflex, etc) and/or fish oil. That's all up to you.

Keeping her is good condition will be the best way to help keep joint issues at bay.
