at what age are they full grown?

Post by JoeFriday » Tue May 24, 2011 8:26 pm

I'm just curious at what age a typical setter reaches its full size. My pup is just about 5 months old and she recently went through a serious growth spurt, but I'm wondering if she's going to go through another one.

Are there typical stages in a dog's physical growth? And is there any way to predict what the full size should be, based on the size at a certain age?

Pup should be the size of one of the parents.
Not fully grown until at least 12 months and maybe 14.

There are definately Stages of Development mentally.

Size is determined by ancestors and it is impossible to predict how big or at what age they will grow.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Not true...all dogs will peak at or before 3yrs with the exception of toys and giants.

So maturing before 3 is a better answer than you can't tell as they are all different? Could you tell us how much before 3?

It's a tough question..but at 3 yrs old you got to think the dog isn't going to get any bigger.

I think my answer is better than it's impossible to predict  .

now now, kids (you flatlanders are always causing problems) ;)

I would have assumed that a dog would be physically mature by 3 years, but thanks for clarifying, Ron. And I guess I was thinking more in terms of Ezzy's understanding, based on the few dogs I've been around. I thought maybe breeders would have seen noticed patterns in physical development. But I guess it's all academic since my pup will get there eventually, one way or another.

no apologies necessary Ron, or Ezzy. I know it was kind of a silly question to begin with. We all see our dogs every day so it's hard to notice the changes in them until we look back. Much like kids who grow like weeds. I think I originally wanted to know because she's finally starting to get crowded in the 'pup crate' that I got for her, thinking that it would only last a month, and it's been a little over two months now. I'll need to shop for a new one soon and I was wondering what size to get for a permanent crate.

Her parents are around 36 to 40 lbs each. Not real big for a setter, but I guess it's typical for a llewellin. And thanks for the compliment!

Chopper (my avatar) was over 2 when he finally fully developed. We was worried that he was going to be too scronny to breed.

18 months pretty much full height. They will continue to fill out for another 6-12 months.
At least that's how it seems to me.

Most dogs will have most of their growth by one, will fill out till two, and fully mature by three. Small dogs will be quicker.

I have a couple of coming 18 month olds that I swear have gained 20% in height in the past few weeks. It's like they put it in neutral during the winter, then took off in high gear.
