What other Purina dog food besides PPP?
What other Purina dog food besides PPP?
Are there other Purina dog foods brands/types that are used by forum members other than Purina Pro Plan Performance? It seems that as far as Purina goes, PPP is the gold standard dog food. I know that it is a 30/20 dog food. Are there other Purina brands/types that are used that are in the excellent/good category but not as high a protein/fat ratio?
Thanks,
Hondo

Pro Plan Original Chicken and Rice. A little lower energy, still rated a performance food.

I don't feed Purina feeds but, there has to be one out there to fit your need. They make several differant ones! Good luck!

I feed Purina One. It is not as high in Protein and fat but it works good for me. The dogs have no issues with weight or energy in the field. It is all I feed and I have used it for a number of years and have used it for a number of different breeds. Bird dogs and house dogs.
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.

Purina one is a good feed IMO and it comes in different formulas. I don't feed Purina myself because I think it is a little over priced compared to some others that are cheaper and just as good, but that's just me. BTW, Purina one will probably be priced pretty close to PPP.

Pro Plan Selects Chicken is a 30/17 and has no corn gluten to "enhance' the GA. As high calorie as PPP but substantially more meat-based protein. PPP has very little.

CNM JM, the therapeutic joint formula, is a 30/12, I believe, and is used for some older performance event dogs that I know. It is sky high in price, though, and only available through vets.

When I fed Pro Plan, I used the original Chicken and Rice and puppies were fed Pro Plan Puppy.
I was given an 18 month Bernese Mountain Dog who was raised on Purina Large Breed Puppy Chow. He was still on it at 18 months as their vet recommended large breed puppy food for the first two years. They gave me nearly a full bag with the dog and I switched him over to what I was feeding at the end of the bag. He seemed to do fine and grew nice and big on that food.
A couple of relatives and some friends feed Beneful. The dogs like the food and do fine on it.

Well I am going to beg to differ on the Purina question.
In my book they are all pretty much low quality foods.
Here's some analysis.

Sue, I don't read any of the dog food analysis sites because most, if not all, are biased and/or have an agenda. Just saying, I would be very careful about taking these things serious.Sue wrote:Well I am going to beg to differ on the Purina question.

Re: What other Purina dog food besides PPP?
I feed dog chow my vet suggested it as I was using canidae but the dogs werent getting enough calcium with the canidae. I trust my vet very much as he has 30+ yrs experience, is very highly reccommended and respected and it doesn't hurt that he is an avid bird hunter and raised many nice britts over the years.
Re: What other Purina dog food besides PPP?
Sue I looked at this sight and searched 4 darn good feeds I have fed to some very good looking dogs over the years. Would you beleive not one of them is recomended....huh to think I've mistreated those many dogs over the years!Sue wrote:Well I am going to beg to differ on the Purina question.
