Treats

Post by JessiNGunther » Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:14 am

I found these in costco this weekend. Then lamb ones are big enough that you could cut in to 4ths . Both my dogs love them and so far they have not made them gassy as some treats will do.

Please make sure you read the fine print on these things. We bought what we thought were some good treats from a similar store: whole chicken pieces, minimal processing, "All American", etc., etc., etc. THEN we read the fine print: they were MADE IN CHINA.

There's a BIG difference between "distributed by" a company in the US or Canada and "made by" a company in the US in Canada. Don't be fooled by the packaging!

I even saw some American Kennel Club dog treats with the AKC logo. Basically, a chicken jerky type of treat. Made in China.

What's worse is that the AKC may never have given that company permission to use their logo! Unscrupulous companies do that kind of thing all the time: fake an endorsement to give themselves credibility.

Caveat emptor: let the buyer beware!

Jessi- If you are looking for made in America chicken jerky- try Blue Buffalo. It's expensive but an easily found chicken jerky product made here.

I live out in the middle of no where But I do drive to the big city once a month or so. Is this something Petsmart would carry ? I also raise my own chickens and have a jerky maker I could just make enough for the family and the dogs. Just leave off the spices on the dogs so they don't get tummy trouble.

Yes, I would think so. I did see a different brand in the grocery store that also was made in US.

Whether it's regular dog food or treats if you're trying out something new for the first time, it's better to buy a smaller quantity, see how it suits your dog and then take it from there. As for checking the fine print, and watching out for Made in China stuff, it's good to know what you're buying for your dog rather than just believing the hyped up copy on the wrap. Personally, I say those who have the time should prepare their own treats for their pets.

To be honest, I'd go with your own version. You already have all the "raw materials" and "processing equipment" so why waste the money?

We were using Jenny-O turkey hotdogs as treats, but at one point Zio developed a sensitive stomach to them. Since we have roast chicken at least once a week, I keep some of the leftovers for him to use for training. We tried the Blue Buffalo chicken strips, but they didn't seem to agree with him. I'm not really enamoured of the way they smell, either. :?

If I had the time I would make the dogs food but that is one for a much later time in my life kids keep ya busy no need to add anything else in.
