Pup limping

Post by Red » Mon Nov 14, 2011 5:10 pm

I just noticed my pup isn't putting any weight on his rear left foot.. I checked his pad and look fine, maybe his hip?
He hasn't trained is 2 weeks so not sure what it could be..

He'll be 1 year old on Dec 1.. Wife has been telling me he looked skinny for a week or two and a friend that saw him last week and again today says he thinks the dog grew since he saw him last, could it be a he's going through a growth spurt?

Wife want to take him to the Vet ASAP...

BTW he jumps on the couch and bed, it's not slowing him down at all, just doesn't put any weight on his rear left foot when standing...

If he is limping and hasn't been training, i would see the vet.

I'm bringing him to the Vet this afternoon, he's not himself today, he's been laying around all day, not like him at all... :(

Doc played around with his knee and the dog reacted a bit, said could be a torn ACL but dog is young and he really didn;t think that was it so he wants me to rest the dog, in the meanwhile they had done an in house lymes test which was positive so they took more blood and are sending it out to get tested so when we come back they can see if he's gotten better..

Bird season just started here too...

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. A treatment of antibiotics should get him back on his feet soon.

I guess I'll find that out when the ELISA results come back.. They did a a rapid test at office just to determine if pup was infected with the Lyme bacterium.
Test also checks for heartworm and 2 other tick-borne infections.

the lyme disease in MN is out of control...Growing up I'd maybe find one or two ticks a summer on me and I'd running around the northwoods and finding one on you in the cities was unheard of. But now, the populations have just exploded. I've found two ticks on my pup this fall (one of them was just last week...we've had temps in the 30s for quite a while too) in the heart of Minneapolis and my neighbors dog (Bernese mountain dog) got lyme disease from one this year as well. Hope you figure out what's wrong and get the pup back to his normal self!

The cranial drawer test for a torn cruciate is pretty definitive. Even is there is a partial tear, your vet should know and eventually it will fully tear. There is no resting a torn CCL. It will not repair itself.

There are not many problems that cause them to be non-weight bearing in a limb. If it was my dog I would check this problem out further with an orthopedic specialist if it persists.

Good luck and keep us posted

Did your vet discuss panosteitis with you or a possible sprain?

Symptoms sound the same as what my pup went through. I know you said the tests came back negative, but it sure sounds like, anaplasmosis. Which is one of the 4 things the vet tested your dog for.

Feel free to contact Me for further ?s.

Two ticks?..."Population explosion"? I've pulled close to a hundred of my dog after an hour hunt in one of my covers in Northern NY. My boy is still neg for lyme, he got the vaccine and booster, maybe it actually works? Some of the experts say the tick has to feed for 48 hours to transmit the bacteria which isn't possible if you keep up with the advantix, pretty much kills them within hours of the initial bite. Still leaves nasty welts on the dog though.

So did mine??? And I check him before I put him in my truck after training and he gets a bath when he gets home, I was using the cheap stuff from walmart...

He's a little better today, putting weight on it and is perking up...

I should have the new test results after 5pm...

Two ticks while in the city in November seems unusual to me. It was 19 degrees today!

Not really, not anything good or conclusive.. The blood work came back negative a 2nd time, but we still don't know why he was feeling down and lame?
He's still limping and I have noticed he avoids putting weight on his right front foot from time to time..

Day 1, He starts not putting weight on rear leg?
Day 2, he start's limping(Sun, I'm thinking growing pains)
Day 3, he's not eating all his food(now I'm getting worried and take him to vet)He test positive for Lyme @ Vet's office
Day 4, Blood work comes back Negative(Doc asks Lab to redo test)
Day 5, Blood work came back negative a 2nd time(Doc wants to stay the course with meds and to give him a call today)( I have noticed he avoids putting weight on his right front foot from time to time)
If he's not better in a few days Doc wants to Xray his knee...

That's where we stand as of today, I'll be calling Vet in a few..
He's still limping but feeling better today, in fact he got into trouble a few times last night...

maybe a dumb question but did you look at his nails to see bruising or did the vet check his nails and toes on that foot?? sorry i didnt read all the posts but i know our GSP jersey when she was about 4 months old was limping and i brought her to the vet, spent 100 bucks on xrays and the vet noticed later in the exam her toe nails were bruised and then it occured to me she had banged her foot on the stairs coming up the deck and yipped a few days before..it took about 2 weeks for her to stop favoring that leg and for it to heal..just sharing so maybe you can give it a check..also on another note i always vaccinate my dogs for lyme also, theres more benefits then not and is it possible the pup tested positive for the inhouse test because of the lyme vaccine in his system?? maybe dogdr will chime in, good luck :) ...ruth

Pain for any reason will cause a dog to not eat.
Google "dogs pano".

He's not in pain when he's stealing my wifes sneaker and running around with it... :D LOL
I think your right tho, because the day he stopped eating he wasn't himself but I think he's not eating well now because of the Doxy?

Update after Doc calls me today...
