Sore feet

Post by Mollyontherun » Mon Dec 26, 2011 6:13 pm

Our older GSP is prone to sore feet... usually a few hotspots on the front paws.

I've read these can be treated with super glue so the dog can continue to hunt. Anyone ever heard of this?

Also... interested in any other ideas to treat sore feet/hot spots.

No. I'd be concerned about gluing over a hot spot. The infection would just go deeper probably. Is the dog wearing foot socks ( rubber hose piece spread open and put on like a sock and duct tape) ?

I soak the foot in epsom salts and warm water a couple times a day. In a week it mostly healed. Don't use hydrogen peroxide for that.

Are the pads of his feet cracked?

Are the "hot spots" on the top of his feet? Does he lick them?

Hot spots are usually an allergy reaction. What exactly do you feed him?

You're right Mike but they also are caused by contamination. Dogs that walk salted sidewalks in the winter get them a lot . Feet should be washed when dog comes home.

She always gets a small area (little smaller than a dime) of skin abraided off of her large pad on both feet. As she has got older... she get them much quicker. On this hunt, they were off before she got to the main hunting field.

Next year we are going back to boots.... though she has kicked boots off in the past.

We are feeding both GSP Nutra Nugget Lamb and Rice.

Thanks for the reply.

sounds like maybe some type of pad toughening product would help. you can use tincture of iodine on the pads, but be careful as it is caustic to other skin. there is a product out that i cant remember the name of, i am sure someone here knows and uses it. Tuff foot, maybe?

This product looks interesting- especially after watching the video on Gundog supply. And also that she has kicked and lost some boots in the past.

Would I put the product on before the first hunt... or only after she begins to get abraisions?

You need to start using it before but I let a friend use it on his setter during a hunt in Montana this year and it worked.
