Maggots

Post by Ranger351 » Tue Dec 27, 2011 9:05 am

Opened a bag of dog food friday and last night noticed it crawling with maggots. Was feeding the old food still but wow is this common?

Had the bag gotten wet at some point?

How long ago did you purchase it? So how long was it at your place? Where/how was it being stored?

Not wet since I've had it. Bought it this past friday and stored indoors in an airtight dog food container.

I put a bag in a dry cold room and the whole thing went moldy , so it's possible.

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking maggots means that flys (flies?) have laid eggs in there and the eggs have hatched (that's where maggots come from, right?). I'm guessing that happened before you bought it, so I agree, take it back and get a refund or return.

They are most likely meal moth larvae. Pretty common, just return the bag to where you bought it.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Yup meal moth larvae and was told it's been spotted in several bags of different brand foods. Seems to be a problem since plants can't find it as eggs and they develop after being packed.

Yep and warm damp conditions bring them out real quick sometimes. Return the bag so they can get the lot number off of it.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.
