Eating Issue.....

Post by paulmeyer21 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:42 pm

I have a 10 month old GSP. He doesn't like to eat. I have tried many different foods and nothing seems to really work. He will eat good for a while and then be very picky. I have tried putting gravy, chicken broth, cheese and yogurt on his food and it doesn't seem to help. He has been like this since the day I brought him home at 9 weeks. He has been dewormed and the vet said he is healthy but a little on the thin side. I am looking for news ideas.

Explain more about feeding times and such. I have never left feed out all day for them to eat as they please. My boys get feed twice a day and have 15 min to eat that's it. Only water is out all day.

A male not wanting to eat at that age, plus the fact it is getting warmer, is no surprise.

It will get worse if you indulge the dog with things added to his food or leave the food out.

Get tough.

Try taking some pics of the dog standing up. He does not look thin at all in that pic. I feed mine as much food as they want and they won't eat more than they want.

If he isn't eating he isn't hungry. If they are hungry they will eat. These dogs are never going to look like the other dogs at Petsmart or the ones that get off the couch once a week to go to the dog park. Get used to the owners of obese dogs telling you your dog is too skinny and you need to feed it they don't know what they are talking about.

I am starting to feed him twice a day. Around 6 am in the morning and between 530 and 6 in the evenings. Do you guys think I should possible which foods? If so what would you recommend?

Mine was the same way. He is almost 4 and just started eating consistently. I too made the mistake of trying to "jazz up" the meal. Finally I put the food down for 15 mins. If he ate, good- if not, oh well.

I wouldn't change the feed yet. The pup looks good in the pic you posted. The dog will eat if it's hungry. Like others have said, give the dog a certain amount of time to eat. It will learn that it needs to eat quickly or goes hungry. Give that a try for a few weeks and see what happens.

Exactly. I've never known a dog to die from starvation if food is provided. The only dog i tempt with some wet dog food is my 13 year old. Smell goes along with hearing and vision.

Is your dog getting treats during the day? They can add up to a lot of calories quickly.

I don't think changing the food will make any difference. ( Pro Plan Performance)

+2. Feed him on your schedule and don't worry about it.
