Dog food spreadsheet

Post by brad27 » Thu May 03, 2012 9:37 am

I'm putting together a spreadsheet on the cost per day for feeding different dog foods. I will email it to anyone that wants it after it's finished. What are you guys feeding and what would you like to see added to the list? The fields will be modifiable, so you can adjust for local price for feed and your dog's kcal requirement. This is what it will basically look like after it is finished.

I a currently feeding Nutrisource adult grain free chicken.
4,120 kcal per kg, 473 kcal per cup 30# bags for $38/bag

This looks like a very useful tool. Thanks for taking the time to put it together and share.

I would be interested in seeing the end results.
Thanks

Add Annamaet Ultra

$55 per 40lbs is about right. 4,228 per Kg and 480 cup.

Question, do you have the weight per cup of food for each formula?

Are you assuming each dog needs 1200 calories per day? If that is the case I think you have to calculate the cost based on weight fed not by cup volume, each food has different density and kibble size and shape.

The dogs kcal requirement is based on what you currently feed, so if you feed 2.5 cups of Annamaet Ultra your dog needs 1200 kcals per day. 3 cups equals 1440 kcals. I know it's not exact, but should be pretty close. I also know not all dogs use the kcals the same way and not all dog foods have all kcals available due to ingredents, but again, it should be close.

Question, do you have the weight per cup of food for each formula?
nope. Everything is based on kcals. So a 40lbs bag of Annament Ultra is 18.14kg or 76,695.92 kcals.

So, cost per day = (price per bag)/((lbs per bag/2.2) X (kcal per kg/dogs kcal need))

cups per day = dogs kcal need/kcal per cup

For those of us with 1 or two dogs spending an extra $1.50 or $3 dollars a month doesn't really matter but if you had a kennel of 15 you could be saving $25 a month by feeding a different, but still good, feed.

And yes, I have alot of time on my hands.

Sure - add digestibility, usable vs. available kcals/cup. Sorry - couldn't resist. :P

@ $55 bag and 3 cups, I calculate $1.02 day. 3 cups is 12 ounces of food @ 8.5 cents per ounce.

On the website - 4 ozs.

Some are heavier, like Dr. Tim's Pursuit is 4.13 ozs per cup, on the website as well.

Both have virtually the same calories by cup, 480 vs 481

Good idea for a spreadsheet. Here's one of our food threads that goes a bit more in depth about differences in food & more accurate calculations by weight instead of volume: viewtopic.php?f=88&t=22996&hilit=weight

Brad you should also give us a report on stools.. feed and measure, collect after digestion,.dehydrate, and weigh.. this should give us some insight in how digestable the food is.

Has anyone ever tried 4Life? I found it at Tractor Supply. The cost is good and there appear to be no fillers. The first listed item is meat and there is no corn. It appears to be very similar to Blue Buffalo and taste of the wild.

That looks like a nice formula with no fillers. Good price. That company also make lots of human foods so they probably have good quality control standards.

My dogs are doing well on it. Nice coats, firm/compact stool, and they maintain well on it without having to eat a ton. My 7 year old female (52 Lbs.) gets 2 cups a day and my 15 month old male (48 Lbs) gets around 3 cups a day. Both dogs are fairly active getting 2 or 3 - 90 minute free runs a week with training and other activities mixed in. I'm hoping my male will taper down a bit after he's done growing.

In other words, I'm happy with the feed.

This is an interesting concept. How will you quantify the quality control of each product? Do all of the companies measure the statistics in a uniform manner? If a company says there product is X % chicken by weight , do they measure the chicken wet then dehydrate the chicken with the fillers thus changing the percentage of chicken in the product. Where do they source there meat products ? Are they sourcing products from foreign countries without the same quality controls we have here in the U.S. .Are they rejected for human consumption? What is their record for products that have been recalled? I would greatly appreciate the answer to all of these questions. I have more but but these ought to keep you busy for a while!!!
