Swollen and hard spot in ear

I was petting my 4 year old brittany and she yelped. My wife found that her ear has a spot that is swollen spot which is hard and ear feels warm. Anyone ever come across this? I don't see any major cuts or ticks. How do you tell if your dog has a fever or sick. I'm thinking that it might be an infection from something.

Fever, I ceck the mouth and if it feels hot to me use a rectal thermometer and (someone back me up on this please) anything above 102 is considered a fever, I am not 100% on that number but I think that is what my vet said. As far as the ear goes, can you post a pic?

can't really see it by a pic with all her hair. We can feel it can't really see it though. She gets real tense when you touch it
