Monorchid testicles

Post by Ms. Cage » Tue Jan 01, 2013 3:48 pm

What is monorchid testicles, the definition? My husband just had a person call and ask this question. The gentleman said his dog has one testicle down normal . The other is there but pressed up against the stomach wall. The dog is I'm thinking 8 mths. old. Should this dog be allowed to breed in the future? PLEASE, I'd like to hear fact not opinions. Hopefully someone is a vet on the board. Howie's opinion is the dog is monorchid but wants to give the man a correct answer

What you are describing is called cryptorchidism.
Typically, if the teste has not descended by 6 months, it should be corrected (removed) surgically.
Because this is a congenital sex-limited autosomal recessive is recommended that the animal NOT be bred.

Monorchid means only one developed. What you are describing is not that.

This is not Monorchid. Monorchid dogs only have one developed testical.
It is not Cryptorchid if the testical is in the scrotum but for some reason held up against the abdomen. Cryptorchid dogs have one or both Testicals inside the abdomen. They usually are infertile because of the high body temperatures.
This is probably not a genetic issue and a vet may be easily able to remove what is holding it up or maybe it will come down as it developes. it could be from a injury also. No genetic reason not to breed this dog if there is a special reason for breeding it . Happy New Year Cj

We don't know the guy from adam. Howie feels the same way but doesn't want to misinform him.

Topher is correct. It is indeed genetic. You can read up on it at the Merck Vet site. Just google Merck Vet Manual and then search cryptorchid in the search bar at the website and you'll find it under the "Overview of Congenital and Inherited Anomalies of the Reproductive System." If you do read that page, you'll also notice that the retained testicle is at a very high risk of developing into testicular cancer. Good luck!
