Buying Meat on Craig's List
This seems to be a trend nowadays and apart from safety, much of it is illegal.
If a buddy has a deer great, but what kind of dog owner would just feed meat from a potentially dangerous source?

Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
Probably the same people who buy and sell beef, pork, lamb, or other meats for their own consumption plus those that would buy for a dog.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Not sure what meat is for sale on Craig's List, but what are your safety concerns - mass lysteria outbreaks?

Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
I thought it was a reasonable question. Who knows where it came from, who butchered it, how it was stored, was it poached, was it stolen?
I would feel just fine buying meat from a small farmer, no issue, but from what I understand that not who sells meat on there.
Isn't selling game illegal? Isn't selling other meat processed at other than a USDA inspected facility illegal?
I have had some pretty good steaks from Walmart, so yes

Where is a small farmer who wants to sell some meat legally supposed to advertise?MonsterDad wrote:I thought it was a reasonable question. Who knows where it came from, who butchered it, how it was stored, was it poached, was it stolen?

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
And Facebook makes it better meat?
Guess i'll have to search for the "Small Producers Wanting to sell Meat" page.

Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
I always check the for sale page on Facebook when I can find it. Must be behind the wanted to buy page.

Monsters dad you are exactly right, to be sold retail it must ne USDA inspected. The local farmer is allowed to also sell meat but only on the hoof though. He can deliver your purchase live to the custom slaughterhouse but unless that packaged meat is inspected it is not legal for resale. the cutter is processing your animal for your consumption. Also game meat in my state can be donated but never sold.
Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
I think you might find the words"For Human Consumption" involved with the laws you are thinking about. Also are you aware of how many chickens and rabbits are sold? We used to raised 400 to 500 hundred rabbits a year when the kids were young and butcher most of them. But I am sure most meat is sold on the hoof and not already processed when you but from a farmer.

Btw wal mart and fresh and easy are two very strict buyers. I would not hesitate to buy an item from them. For a large company they are very hands on.
Craigslist? Wow wohldnt touch it.

Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
I have never seen home processed meat sold on Craigslist or anyplace else for that matter but suppose somebody has. Private sales are normally either on the hoof or quarters that are processed through a slaughtering facility.ultracarry wrote:Btw wal mart and fresh and easy are two very strict buyers. I would take a guess and say that it's probably the same people who drive around selling meat out of trucks. As for the venison goes it's usually something like Axis Deer which isn't a "game" animal and as a side benefit, tastes better than whitetail.

Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
Every late Spring/early Summer we get the guys up here with a chest freezer in the back of a pickup and a sign advertising "Fresh" Seafood! Yeah, right! Gotta get me some of that!Brazosvalleyvizslas wrote:I would take a guess and say that it's probably the same people who drive around selling meat out of trucks. Re: Buying Meat on Craig's List
I have no problem with Wal-mart's meat.. Craigs list however, sounds like a good way to buy someone's ex-lover in small shrink wrapped packages... no thanks...
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.
