So for the last few days my pup has had the runs. She is going about every 2-4 hours around the clock. She saw a vet on Sunday who acted like it was fine but I am afraid she was just trying to push me out the door because the place was so busy.

I have to assume it is from one of two things:

1. Her food. She is getting Iams and is the same food she has had from day 1 with breeder.

2. These dental sticks my wife gives to the dogs. I told her last night to stop giving them to her until I figure out what is going on.

Is there something I can give her that will help? I did hear you can give them pepto bismo but they sounded like they were guessing more than knowing.

I think stopping the treats is a good idea. You can use a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin, plain not pie filling.

Most people would fast a dog for a day, but I wouldn't for a pup.

Try the pumpkin, works wells and is very gentle on the system. Also review how much food she is getting and make sure its not too much.

I hope the Vet checked for Giardia? I like to keep metronidazole on hand just for this.

If all other health issues are ok try...pasta and cooked/bland hamburger...this will clear them out, give them the energy they need and solidify the stool. Make up a bunch of this, divide it into portions and put in the refrigerator for daily/future use...usually 2-3 days is good, then start reintroducing the dog food back into them.

When was he last time your pup was de-wormed? When you went to the vet did she give you any medicine to take with you to take care of any thing? I just brought home a gsp a month ago and she initially had the runs for a few days but I also made a vet appointment the day after I picked her up and the vet gave her de-wormer then. It also may take a bit of time for the pup do adjust to your dog food. I would not worry just yet my lab some times gets the runs at random but that is usually when she is nervous.

I take my dogs off of the regular feed for a few days. I cook min rice with chix broth and stir in an egg.

If after a few days it does not clear up, go find another vet.

+1 I have used this many times. When she got the runs really bad I also cooked rice and chicken to feed her for a couple of days. Good luck. The vet also gave me something to make her stools a little more solid.

1. Get a new vet.
2. STOP all food for 24 hrs. When you start again feed smaller amounts for a few days.
3. No more Denta Sticks ever. Puppies don't need them.
4. Go to a new vet if diarrhea doesn't stop once feeding starts again.

Vet called me back today. She said stool test came back negative for any and all parasites but wants to put her on de-wormer anyways. She also said I need to change dog foods. She said the food I am using is too high in protein and that is probably why she has the runs.

Her last stool was not runs but was still very soft. She is done with dental stix and she isn't receiving any treats.

Iams is moderate protein, doesn't seem like that would be the reason. Sounds like too many denta stixs to me. Those have chemicals to get rid of tartar on the teeth.

People are feeding pups 40% protein foods nowadays.

Yes they are but that is too high.

The young dogs I've had get Purina Forta Flora (probiotic) when they get the runs. Also, if the runs continue, I go to a low fat diet of boiled rice and boiled chicken without the skin. I make the rice nice and soft so it digests easily. My vet says she recommends lowering the fat when a dog gets the runs until it's cleared up. I toss in some sweet potato sometimes.
