Where are you all buying your Doxy from these days?

I've always purchased from California Vet Supply in the past, but they're only selling the powder (make your own capsules??) now and I'm finding reference to an "industry-wide shortage of Doxy". Several places are out of the 100 mg capsules, or are charging double ($70 for 100 capsules, when I know I've purchased for around $33 in the past).

We just opened a new bottle to treat a dog with rotating lameness who has had lyme before. If he's feeling better in a couple days, which I suspect he will be, we'll treat until the bottle is gone, but I like at least a 30 day supply on hand at all times.

I don't know about doxy in particular, but some drugs are encapsulated in different skins in order to get them past the stomach into the duodenum and beyond before being released. I think I'd check into it, since it could be that it would be rendered ineffective or perhaps harmful in other ways if absorbed in the stomach. Just to be on the safe side.

I wound up ordering from www.revivalanimal.com. It was $59 shipped and I received it in 3 days, and not the $70 several other online sources are charging (AND they had it in stock). Still quite a bit more expensive than I've paid in the past, but I hate to NOT have it onhand.

Karen,
I've been using primarily Metronidazole (generic of Flagyl) for my primary antibiotic. Metronidazole is cheap. Are you using Doxycycline because you get a better response?

I keep doxy on hand to treat Lyme Disease. Flagyl has also been associated with seizures in dogs in the past. I use it exclusively for stomach issues.

Thanks Karen,
Fortunately Lyme hasn't been a problem where I've hunted in the west. Although it's not out of the question. I've been using Flagyl because my vet had prescribed it for both dogs in the past and she provides some extra stock for my kit when needed.

Mario, I use the same stuff, but it's out of stock just about everywhere. There is an "industry-wide shortage", which of course, means everyone that isn't sold out has doubled the price.

There is only one company making it now. That's why the price went up so much. A friend told me she used to pay $40 for 500 tabs. Now it is $70 for 100.
