OK my usually very hyper 1yo gsp has crashed in the last 24 hrs. He appears to have trouble walking and has zero energy. He still eats and drinks but it does nothing for his energy level. His diet has been consistent and he is utd on all shots and vaccines but there has been a change in his routine. Lately I have been taking him to work with me building a boardwalk at a community park. It is more of a nature trail through some rough fl river bottom with plenty of mosquitoes and ticks. Any ideas on what could be wrong would be very helpful. I'm thinking possible heat exhaustion as there are no signs of digestive or internal problems.

did you take the dog's temperature? any sign of a back or neck injury?

No I haven't taken his temp but I gave him a cool bath a put him inside (he usually stays outside) and he seems to be improving. He did have some slight diarrhea but nothing to bad so I'm thinking the fl heat may have gotten to him. Will keep thread updated just in case something change.

I'd have him tested for Lyme disease- simple blood test. The deer ticks are unbelievable this year.

edit : If positive a course of antibiotics should solve the problem.

He is up to date on Parvo vaccine right?

That's why I asked whether the dog had a fever. Could also be a mild case of anaplasmosis.

He doesn't what? All I said was get him to a vet if he is really concerned about his condition. And that would depend on how he is acting and any changes that may have taken place since he first posted.

There is a difference in being really concerned and just wanting some info. Wanting to know what you all do to stop an ear from bleeding is wanting info. The dog is so weak it can't standup from loss of blood would make me really concerned. How about you, my friend?

I think it is best you have the dog looked at in person by a veterinarian.

the vet can see, touch, smell and listen to the dog in person, and has the training and access to medicine/equipment that will diagnose and treat the dog. if the dog is really sick, then the vets office is a much better source of information that an anonymous internet forum. not saying there arent alot of knowledgeable, intelligent dog people here, but if my house is on fire i call the fire department, not my neighbor across town. Yes, I am a vet, so i admit i am biased. nothing smartass intended.

Guys I really think it was just the heat. After 24 hrs inside and pumping him full of fluids and some vitamins he is doing just fine. Just as a precaution I made a appt at the vet for first thing Saturday so I'll let you guys know the final result. Thanks for the info and hopefully it is none of the ailments you all suggested.
