Dog Pad Blisters

Post by vizslatrainer » Thu Aug 08, 2013 9:37 pm

We took one Vizsla to a hunt test last weekend. She was limping on Monday and found blisters on her front pads. She was not on pavement at all, just dirt and rocks, stickers and brambles. Does anyone know how this happens? Im at a loss. Thanks

It means the dog's pads aren't toughened up.
How much roading (gravel roads) do you do ?
Also the pads can be too soft due to zinc deficiency.
Give the dog 50 mg of Zinc Gluconate three times a week.

I never road the girl. She does agility twice aweek as well as hunt training. I will check and see how much zinc is in her diet. Wife does all the nutrition stuff and is very religious about make sure they have all the nutrients.

Sometimes its just the over exuberance of a young dog, or one wrong slide on a rock or pavement. If its a continuous problem then you start looking at causes like deficiencies or problems with the way the dog is built that affects its gait. I wouldn't worry until its a chronic problem.

If i have that issue, time will heal her up, or i also use Cut Heal, found at most equine supplies or tractor supply.

1.
2. Lots of things to look at in addition to the total amount. If the dog's pads are 'soft', then the zinc definitely needs to be upped.............. And ROADING ! ! !

I heard it somewhere, can't remember where, that some of the police canine units in NYC used it on their dogs pads to protect from the pavement.

Maybe Dr. Tim will comment. This is probably something he has treated on the teams before.

I have also heard that biotin should be paired with zinc.

I just had a chat with a guy whose dog was experiencing peeling on the nose and pads and they thought it was an allergy. After a few weeks they had the dog tested and turned out it was a zinc problem. Dog's level was just below the low end of the acceptable range.

Just a caution. Supplementing with Zinc is not without it's own risks. Over-supplementing can lead to toxicity. : http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/tox ... hod8xHBzlo

Please note that the article says : "it occurs when animals ingest an exorbitant amount of zinc-containing materials."
It also says:
"Causes
Ingestion of zinc-containing materials, such as:
•Nuts
•Bolts
•Staples
•Nails
•Board game pieces
•Zippers
•Some toys
•Jewelry
•Pennies
•Certain lozenge brands
•Some lotions

Nowhere does it say anything about proper doses of zinc supplements.
50 mg Zinc Sulfate, 3X per week is safe and effective.

Did you notice where I said the above ?
Supplementing is not the same as over-supplementing.

Makes me wonder how we had a kennel full of shorthairs for 40 + years and never supplemented a one of em, never saw food allergies back then either and still haven't.

You want to use something that has Benzoin or Tincture of Benzoin in it such as Tuff Pads. This will toughen them up faster than anything else.
