De-worming for dogs

Post by imadoglover » Mon Oct 23, 2006 8:07 am

Hi!
I’m a huge animal lover and I was wondering if anyone could help me solve
my problem…
I have a dog who’s name is Elvis and a cat who’s name is Princess!
I’ve discovered that Elvis had worms, (is it possible that he got from other pets???)
so I want to my vet and he gave him a de-worming medication in a tablet form but he wouldn’t swallow it!!
I didn’t want to use too much force so I tried wrapping it with some sausage but he some how figured it out!
please help me!!
Tami

Wrap the pill up in a small ball of peanut butter and let him lick the whole deal off a finger.

Do what casper says, but make sure you put the pill all the way back in the throat. If you put the pill at all forward on the tongue, they will "tongue" it and spit it out. Helps to stroke the dog's throat while you hold their mouth shut.

Make sure it is not an edible pill though. They are too big usually to stuff down a dog's throat. Standard pill size pills are fine.

I was told to cover it with a little bit of cream cheese. I tried it and my dog never suspected a thing. It worked great. :)

Best,
about five months ago my dog Angie suffered from worms.
my friend told me to buy a de-worming pill and mix it with some chicken but
Angie figured it out and only ate a quarter…
that happened a couple of times unlit two months ago I’ve found a solution in a form of dry food that my Angie really liked and I didn’t have to force her at all !!!
you should try it …

I just started Rex on a Intercepter de-wormer this morning, these are edible pills and he likes the taste, so thats no problem, he is also on Cephalexon for seom swelling and gets one capsule twice a day and I use the ball of peanut butter trick, he looks forward to his meds with no issues.

This is a basic skill that all dog owners should know!!! Relying on bribery and treats to get a dog to take regular medications may be an option, but knowing how to forcibly administer pills is necessary in emergency situations or when a bribe is not available.

Have your vet show you how to place pills on the back of the tongue if you do not know how to do so.

I heartily concur. When I gotta do it, I do it. When I can make it a treat, I do it.

Same way with the Ivermectin. I could chase them down and squirt it down their throat. It's a lot easier, though, to squirt it on a half-slice of bread and toss it to them. One toss, one gobble, no issues.

Greg, I do bread also. Never had one that wouldn't eat it yet.

I have done both ways but I prefer to use the treat for the monthly heartwormpill. I have use the peanut butter or sliced cheese. I will take about a 1/3 of the slice & tear it into 2 peices. One I wrap in around the pill & form to a ball. THe other I just form to a ball.

Feed the pill first follwed by the plain one. I normally use them for rewards will working on whatever command I want to work on.

I use this method also. Often I also coat the pill with butter or margarine. Never failed yet.
Don't be afraid to push the pill far back on the tounge with your fingers if it doesn't land far enough back. be carefull of reaching in from the side though, the dog's natural reaction is to bite down when he/she feels something on those back teeth.
