What is growing on my dog's lower lip?

Post by 41magsnub » Sat Jul 19, 2014 7:37 pm

2 yo spayed female GWP named Maddie. Noticed this sore looking area a couple of days ago and it has grown. Going to call the vet for an appointment Monday, but looking for any ideas ahead of time.

Any ideas? Is this some sort of infection, skin cancer, cheat grass, doggie herpes (if that's a thing), or what? It doesn't seem to be bothering her at all.

Thanks!

sebaceous cyst?

See the "skin problems in dogs" slide show at the bottom of the link too.

Does she drink out of tupperwear?

No, but she has used the same plastic dog dishes since she was 8 weeks old. Thinking plastic allergy?

Yes

I had a lab with a chin that looked much the same, worse actually and it cleared up with treatment and a non-plastic bowl.
I forget the meds used but whether this be plastic allergy or some other skin infection, etc....the cause and secondary issues will normally be able to be resolved.
Good luck.

I would also consider a second opinion of whatever opinion you receive.
Allergies, et al can be tough to diagnose.

*I should also add...I mentioned tupperwear since the lip on those can be rougher than say a rounded lip on a plastic dog dish.
The straight edge can irritate a dog's chin...imo.

Would it take 2 years for that to affect it?

I don't know...there may be a time component to plastic exposure or it may have been aggravated by a scratch, etc...or not.
The OP was simply looking for ideas.
I gave him one from my experience.
I would expect the vet to provide the best guidance as to the chin issue.
As well, the chin could be a secondary infection....or something else quite simple and easily remedied.
I hope simple it is.

Thanks guys, I have a vet appointment for this afternoon.

I do have a pretty good option for a second opinion if this doesn't clear up quickly. One of my hunting buddies is a semi-retired vet and another is a dermatologist (people doctor). They are both out of town, but would help if needed. One is dogless and the other's Brittany is too old to hunt all day. Both are depending on me this year for a bird dog.

You know - an aggravated scratch kind of makes sense as a possibility per the tupperware comment. At one point as a pup she decided one of the dishes would make a good chew toy and the rim is a bit rough. No matter what the vet says, I see new stainless steel dishes in her immediate future.

Sorry but that quote wasn't me. I had the same problem you are having when someone suggested it.

Vet has no idea what it is. She observed it is not swollen, just the hair is gone and it is pink. However, the sore is fading. The skin color is now just kind of pink instead of bright red. It is noticably better this afternoon than it was this morning. So, I have some new SS dog dishes and will watch it for a few more days. I sent the picture off to my Vet buddy and the dermatologist to see if they have any thoughts.

I knew someone would say that , just as soon as I posted it.:)

8pm here now- glad to hear the vet thought it wasn't anything serious. I'd be interested in hearing what the dermatologist says - at your convenience. :)

Nothing yet from my buddies, but it improved noticeably overnight. It has changed from bright red, to pink, now it is yellow fading back to her normal skin color.

Both of them replied. Paraphrasing them both: "No idea what it was, something irritated it but since it is healing it is nothing to worry about."

This morning the spot is almost gone.

one of my little dogs got a sore on her lip that looked just like that. I asked all the same questions and feared it was something nasty too.

Turned out I had bought them some big old soup bones that week, and apparently she just gnawed on it so hard she rubbed her lips raw. Took the bone away, healed up in a couple of days and all the hair grew back. Hoping this is the same case for your guy

Thanks all - Maddie is completely healed. There is a bare spot where the sore was that I'm sure will grow its hair back quickly.

It happened again, this time I figured it out!

On Sunday after 2 days of very hard hunting we did a shot romp around a field to keep her from stiffing up. As always after hunting I checked her over thoroughly and there were no sores on her face. She was carrying around a giant piece of bark for most of the walk. When we got home she had the exact same sore on her lip, this time really fresh and still bleeding. It is healing and fading now the same as before. Also as before, she seems completely unaware of it.
