Amount to feed 11 week old puppy

Post by MNM » Thu Mar 12, 2015 8:06 am

I have a 11 week old Brittany puppy who I have been feeding 2 cups per day separated in 3 meals. I've heard to feed as much as they want but my puppy is a pig and I think would eat until explodes. What amount do you recommend?

Feed as much as the pup needs to stay in condition and basically that will be what he will eat in a few minutes. A pretty good rule to go by is whenever it stops for a bit pick the feed up and it gets no more till the next feeding. And by the age of your ppup U wiuld cut back to twice a day feeding.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I "Free feed" my dogs, Delmar says keep the feed pail full and dog will eat only what he needs, feed him a little bit twice a day that pup will eat everything put down in front of him. I find this to be a true statement. Keep the food bucket full and pup will be better off for it.

My 11 week old GSP is currently eating 2.25 cups per day plus a few small treats throughout the day. The bag says 2 1/8 so he is right there. He currently weighs 15.5 pounds.

I also divide it between 3 feedings.

I cant "free feed" my dogs at any age. They would be severely over weight and may bloat or twist their stomach or cause fights if one walks away.

It also depends on the feed as to how much you feed. Calories in = Calories out. 2- 2/12 cups should be plenty. Heck my 55lb active males only get that much during the off season and that's on a 35/25 food.

The bag is a starting point, but feed what your pup needs to be in good condition. I don't free feed either. I like to know when they eat and how much. It keeps their BM schedule regular and prevents bloat or other issues on hunt or "hard" training days.

I too like to know exactly how much they eat. I actually keep track of calorie intake and weight on pretty much a daily basis.

FWIW: my now 12.5 week old pup is now at 2.5 cups, still divided up between 3 feedings. 417 kcal/cup, 27/18 food.
