Health experts warn of blastomycosis high risk in dogs

New London — Animal health experts are warning dogs are at a high risk of contracting blastomycosis. This after the state 13 confirmed cases of the fungal infection in people who tubed down the Little Wolf River.

As we've learned over the past few weeks, blastomycosis comes from the spores of a fungus living in soil along rivers and it's something that can affect you as well as your canine counterpart.

"It's contracted by inhalation. So, commonly, it occurs in dogs that are outside rooting around in the soil," explained veterinarian Dr. Laura Nelson who works for the Fox Valley Humane Association.

"In fact, I think dogs can probably acquire it more easily than humans, because they've got their nose to the ground and they're digging in the soil," added Jim Kazmierczak with the Wisconsin Division of Public Health.

The illness shows similar signs in dogs as it does in humans.
