I just started to give my 7 yr old springer Cosequin ASU Sport. does anyone like the performance of this particular product?
i am also curious what breeders may suggest/use as supplements for working dogs. i would love to hear what experienced handlers/breeders suggest and why they use/like a specific product or active ingredient.
we have taken our dog to numerous vets and i ask each vet about supplements. their opinions differ, some citing scientific studies. one vet compared supplements for dogs to humans taking vitamin c when humans get sick. does it really help?? maybe he says? that vet said if you personally think you see a difference and are willing to invest in supplements with no negative side effects to your dog, why not use the supplements. if you feel the opposite, then dont use that supplement. I thought that was a fair answer.

Re: Supplements
Very first thought I have is why feed a feed that doesn't supply what your dog needs. Second thought is if you can see the difference in performance then your dog has been drastically short for a long time of what you are supplementing . Thirdly is why would your dog be short when th thousands of other dogs that are eating the same as yours are not suffering also.
So my answer has always been if I need to supplement I will change the food I am using and I also know from experience that even if your dog will benefit it will only be visible through minute testing in a lab and not be anything I can see.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Re: Supplements
My dogs have been on Cosequin ASU for several years now. An ortho vet at Ohio State recommended it for one of my older dogs who had metatarsal fractures which impeded motion in his 'wrists' . It helped him a lot, and it seems to keep my next oldest dogs comfortable and active (12, 8 years old). I give it to my young dog as a preventative measure, not sure it will help, but sure it won't hurt.
Our regular vet also recommends Cosequin, and says if someone wants to use a supplement, it's best to go with one that has been researched as Cosequin has been.

Re: Supplements
The only studies supporting Cosequin are the "studies" performed by the company itself.
There is not one study on man or beast that shows those supplements are better than placebo.

Perna however has some benefit, it is also known as Green Lipped Mussel. Annamaet Endure contains Perna,

Re: Supplements
Thank you guys. I appreciate the advice.
Re: Supplements
I use some stuff called Endure, which is glucosamine and chondroitin.
It's a powder that smells like the South China Sea at low tide, so the dogs really like it
Can't tell if it works, but my dogs hunt over 100 days in the field every year.
