Any alternatives to Prescription C/D Food?

Hi All
My Aunt and Uncle have a 2 year old Beagle. In the past year, she's had 3 UTI's, and repeated urine testing shows crystals in her urine despite repeated bouts of antibiotics.
The vet recently recommended changing her diet to the prescription C/D food. Not only is the food exceptionally pricey for a rather small bag, the contents are not very great nutritionally.
As such, they are looking for alternatives that might be able to keep the crystals in her urine to a minimum, but also provide her with a higher quality food.
All options are on the table, so if anyone has experience with this and opted away from the prescription diet with success, please share.
Thank you!
