Drug to Delay a Heat Cycle
I was wondering if anyone has used any of he drugs available to delay a dog's heat cycle? My dog is at a trainer until the 3rd week in April. The last weekend in April and all of May I plan to run her in some NSTRA trials. My dog is currently 20 months old. She had her first heat cycle last July when she was just over a year old and has not had a cycle since. Murphy's Law is that right after I get her back from the trainer and head to the first trial she will come into heat and screw up the whole trial season. If she hasn't come into heat by the 1st of April I'd like to delay her cycle until after the first of June. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Set her up to get married. That removes all interest in extra curricular activities.

Never used that , but my experience has been that if a dog is in heat , they can run alone as the last dog in the trial.(AF) Might want to check that out with the club you are interested in. Of course the dog can not be staked out with others , but must be kept a ways from the trial grounds.

I participate in NSTRA trials. Each brace is run with two dogs. Bitches in heat are not allowed.Sharon wrote:Never used that , but my experience has been that if a dog is in heat , they can run alone as the last dog in the trial. Okay Thanks. AF trials are different obviously.

Long time ago, but I used Cheque drops on one of the girls. It kept her out of season, but gave her a horrible stank. IIRC she also seemed like a bubble off during that time.

I have not read very good things about Cheque. Obevan pills are probably a better alternative and there is an injection called Delvosteron that appears to have the fewest possible side effects and it lasts for 3 months.shags wrote:Long time ago, but I used Cheque drops on one of the girls. Yeah, at that time Checque Drops was The Best New Thing. The *only* thing

You can use Megestrol but it is not risk free. Side effects include possible pyometra and endometritis. These side effects are rare at the dose required to prevent estrus but it can occur and prevent future breeding.

Hearing and reading to many bad things with these drugs. Just going to let nature run it's course.
