Dog Sneezing.... anyone have experience with this??

Post by Golden1 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 6:24 am

Hello everyone,
I have a young GSP (1 1/2) that I took grouse hunting a couple months ago. The next day he began to a sneezing fits where he would sneeze viscously 4-5 time then be fine. I thought he must've gotten into some seeds or something but then it went on for a few more weeks. I took him to the vet and he said one nostril was dripping more than their other and gave us an antibiotic (Cephalexin 500mg). The antibiotic did not have any noticeable affect. The vet said the next step would be to have a procedure done. So I agreed and he went in with a scope and he also took X-Rays. Then told us his nose was really inflamed but found nothing more. He gave us prednisone and a compound nose drip that contains gentamicin, dexamethazone, and neosynephrine decongestent. This has not seemed to work either. I should also note he has remained very active and playful, while having a good appetite. The sneezing also occurs usually after being active and waking up. The next step would be a Nasal Endoscopy and according to my vet only 2 vets in NY preform this and one is at Cornell. I don't really want to have to spend 1700 but will if absolutely necessary. Any thoughts on this or experience? Thanks for taking the time to read.

My dog, if it went on that long with no improvement, I'd look into a scoping procedure. One time at a vet clinic where I worked, the vet pulled a stick out of a dog's nostril. It was stuck wau up in there.

IDK how it goes at Cornell, but I've taken animals to the OSU vet school/clinics. The prices were reasonable and at each step farther into the process, they outlined the whys and wherefores and let me know the approximate cost before proceeding.

Good luck, I hope you get things set right.

Good point by Shags.Try looking up vet schools in NY (or other states if close), and calling to see if they do this and if so, the cost. Relying on an individual local vet for your only source of information may be an error. Won't take much time or effort to find out.

In fairness, my dog sneezes like this a couple of times a week only after waking up in the morning, but it didn't start after exposure to seeds or sticks. My vet said to pay no attention, but he clarified that it was only in the morning. He's been doing it for quite a few years and seems quite healthy. I make jokes that he's allergic to dog hair. Id get this checked out myself; the post-activity and sudden onset would persuade me.

I'd be pretty aggressive with this case. If that seed migrates, it could result in a dead dog. Even if it doesn't migrate, it could be a career ender for a hunting dog.

Over the years I have had two different GWPs run a stick up their nose which broke off inside the nose. Both dogs would go into periodic violent sneezing fits but then appear normal for awhile in between sneezing fits. Knocked em both out and removed the stick. One was an adult dog and he was immediately fine. The other was a 4 month old pup and it took two weeks before the swelling in his nose went down and his sense of smell returned. We scoped the puppy to the tune of $2K before the stick was removed. We did not scope the adult dog because a tiny filament of the end of the stick could be seen and was also easier to get ahold of the end of the stick with the dog under sedation.

No acceptable alternative to resolving the problem but to spend the money is how it was/is for me and my dogs. A simple test is to hold your thumb over one nostril at a time and check to see if air is coming out of each nostril.

I am no vet but the symptom being alot more to one nostril vs. both, points more to a foreign object in one nostril vs an allergy which I would expect to affect both nostrils equally.

The only problem I have with being a foreign body is that he has never bled and never pawed at his nose. The vet saw nothing when he did the scope but inflammation on both sides, but as someone pointed out something may be up there far. I may go get a second opinion. I also put my finger on both nostrils and felt air flow in both as someone pointed out I should try.

Yes that was a suggestion I posted above. It was demonstrated to me by a vet specializing in scoping dogs nasal passages at a Blue Pearl facility. We had already removed a stick from the pup's nose but his sense of smell had not returned and I was concerned if something had been missed. He did the simple test I posted and advised against spending another $2K. The pup's sense of smell returned as the swelling came down.

Both times two different GWPs had a broken off stick up a nostril, neither dog bled or pawed at their nose. They went into a violent sneezing fit, then acted normal, then it would start up again. The adult dog actually went on hunting and we completed a 4 bird limit of wild KS rooster pheasants. It was Thanksgiving day so the Vet was closed. Hunted the next morning and he corralled another limit of 4 roosters before the vets office opened. With 2.5 inches of stick up one nostril.

The other dog was 4 months old, never bled, never pawed, never acted sick but sneezed periodically. We had to scope the pup to find the stick and get it out.

When you say your vet scoped the dog, I am confused what procedure they did. I am referring to a specialist running a fiber optic up the dogs nose while sedated.

The vet preformed a scope of the sinus area while my dog was sedated.

Thought I would give an update, my dog had the rhinoscopy done and a 3 inch long twig was found in his nose. Poor pup had it in there too long. Vet said he should recover fine. He seemed fine and gave no signs of being disturbed other than sneezing. These are tough dogs !!!!

Clearly you did the right thing. Was this the Nasal Endoscopy that (according to your vet) only 2 vets in NY ? Was it indeed $1700? Did you contact vet schools? Where did you get it done?

Congratulations on taking proper care of your dog.

Yes it was the nasal endoscopy and my vet did not say that there are only two vets, but the ones he recommended the most. I did not originally word that correctly. I didn't contact any vet schools and went to veterinary specialists in Rochester, NY. It did end up costing a little over 1700.
