My new Setter pup’s gland prolapsed in one eye. He is going in for a really freaking expensive surgery tomorrow at an eye specialist with no guarantee that it will correct the situation long term. Pretty bummed out about the whole deal. Anybody ever have to deal with it?
Thanks

That is terrible - and a new pup!
Never had cherry eyes here , but had a great GSP go blind in both eyes from cataracts, at age 5. Wondered why he was running into fences, trees etc. $3000. per eye to get it fixed. I chose to put him down as becoming a couch potato would have been unkind.

Bought a VERY blue-blooded dog from a name kennel a long time ago - they're no longer in business.
Got the pup home and shortly afterwards it too had cherry-eye. It was no use to me at that point so, I gave it away and the new owner paid for the expensive surgery - again with no guarantee. Eventually, I got my money back from the breeder.
The dog ended up fine after the surgery but I looked elsewhere for my next pup.
While it wasn't established - at that time - that cherry-eye was 100% genetic, I would have to say....it appears genetic. BUT, I'm not a DVM so....JMO.
I would not breed that pup of yours and risk putting someone else in this position.
I'm so sorry it went this way for you. In rare cases, the only person more disappointed than you is the breeder!

Had a ,male dog years ago. Had a cherry eye in his left eye. Vet plucked it out, anti biotics and that was it. Was no big deal. Healed just fine and never had another problem.
Re: Anybody ever have to deal with cherry eye?
Yeah no fun for anybody involved. From what I have been able to find on the internet seems like the surgery they did has about a 80-90% success rate. Scary part is that I guess a lot of times the second eye could also have issues and the procedure is ridiculously expensive, at least in our area. No plans to breed him, just hope he can live a normal bird dog life after this. Don’t want to be put in a place to have to make any really tough decisions.
