bowl resection
bowl resection
Any of you guys have any experience with a dog who has had some large intestine removed?
My tiny female gracie was losing wieght so we took her into the vet yeterday, and today they opened her up to remove what they thought was a blockage, only to find a tumor.
They removed about 12 inches of her large intestine,to get all the tumor.
Any of you have something like this done?
She is still at the vet,she comes home on wed.

Yes, if it were just the resection she should recover 100% with no after effects. Have had one dog with a resection myself and also have had friends with the same problem. Usually it is a sock. Unfortunately, when cancer has reached that stage, it is usually elsewhere. That is exactly how we lost Spot's mother.
interestingly, the multiple xrays with berium showed a blockage, but no tumor.
When they opened her up,they removed grass, which they felt had blocked the xrays from finding the tumor.
I was told the surgical vet was shocked,as he did not expect a tumor, becouse the xrays did not show one.
We will know more soon, the tumor was sent to marshfield, for a biospy.
I have been lucky so far with cancer, only my 12 year old had mast cell,
which we caught early, that was two years ago.
Our gsp's are just like us,stuff happens.

No she has been battling carcenoid tumors for the last 6 years.Wagonmaster wrote:Crohn's?
One of her surgeries left some bad scar tissue that caused a blockage in her small intestine and the section "coiled up like a rattlesnake" (surgeon's words) and died. It goes septic quite fast and can be very dangerous.
She has a clean bill of health now though according to the hospital's finest.
