Dog meds question

Post by Trigger » Sun Aug 19, 2007 12:38 pm

I am curious as to the monthly routines you have for your dogs. Ivomec and such. Just want to ensure I am not missing something. Heartguard and K-9 advantix is getting rather expensive for just 4 dogs (1 female GSP, 2 Catahoula Leopards, and one miniature Dachshund). Does Ivomec work on Ticks and fleas as well.

On a second note do you give your dogs any additional supplements during hunting season?

Sorry for the newbie question.

The Ivermectin at the 1%-0.1cc per 10 lbs body weight will handle heart worms, round worms but not tapes or whips. It will kill any fleas or ticks on the dog for several days.

I don't think that it should be considered a comprehensive flea and tick treatment.

We haven't had a flea in years, but I keep Frontline around just in case.

I don't get to hunt much here, but when I'm working the dogs hard, I feed them 30-20 instead of 26-16 or I feed a little more and put a tablespoon or two of corn oil on the food.

When we're out of town hunting or trialing, the dogs sometimes won't eat good. I tend to take some Bil-Jac frozen with me to get them to eat.

Best regards, Greg J.

That's about all I do also. Including the frozen Biljac. I do have to use flea control in the summer though!

So what about the tape and whip worms? Just a regular wormer for that.

Thanks Cherrystone

I will usually just give a general worming with Fenbendazole (panacur) every six months.

Once a month they get a bath, get Frontline Plus, and heart worm preventative. I also give a brewers yeast garlic tablet to them on Tuesday's. I also feed a good premium food with the Omega 3 additives.

thanks gwgdog66...
So after all of the suggestions I believe I will follow this routine:
Begining of month Ivomec 1/10th cc per 10lbs, K-9 advantix two days after bath, and a general wormer about every 6 months.

Thanks for all the replies

whip worms have a 2-3 month life cycle. I alternate Ivomec and Interceptor every other month. Tapes are rare and really only contracted from two sources: other animal intestines consumed, especially rabbit and fish, and fleas. Fleas are the most common way dogs get tapes and EVERY time I have had dogs with tape worms (all 2 times) it's becuase a boarding dog came in with fleas.

I would worry much more about whips than tapes. Beside, tapes show up in the stool if you've got em, looks like rice... or if it's really bad long segmented sections can pass.

Whip worms are especially hard on older, pregnant, nursing, or dogs with some other mild illness and can make a little thing very bad very quickly. But a generally very healthy dog can have whips for a good while and you may never know or see signs. But it can go downhill quickl, so I don't take chances with them. JMO

I use Fenbendazole every 6 months also. In that month, I skip the Ivermectin.

I use the Ivomec on the 10th of each month and Strongid paste the size of a pearl on the tongue every other month.

Bio-spot every other month as that is all I need.

Side note, my vet just loves these guys, so they get to visit him every 6 months just because.

Who needs to visit the vet??? I just buy the fenbendazole and treat them myself. Heck with all of my dogs I HAVE to treat them myself. Too expensive to visit the vet just for this type of thing.

Yeah that is the reason I was asking around here as I have enough dogs and that vet bill gets expensive. I even use an old country vet that gives me great deals as we hunt together a lot. He informed me the last time I had him on the phone that it would be a lot cheeper for me to do it myself. He told me the same thing you guys did but I wanted to ask you all as I hate to keep calling him. Thanks for all the info

Our vet too works with us. I think when you have this many dogs, if they are smart, they realize that they will make more money by working with you and helping you save than having you go elsewhere  We buy so much frontline and interceptor, that he sells it at nearly his cost, with just a very small mark-up and he'll ship it to us when we run out, so I don't even have to drive over there. He's about an hour away. He also comes to us for vaccinations and gives us a decent but not great discount for that. No discount at all for spays, neuters, and other surgeries... unfortunately...

Just a side note here:
We have just seen two cases of nicely cared for dogs, who's owners were giving ivermectin monthly, but the dogs had contracted heartworms anyway, though showing no symptoms yet. After talking with the owners we are suspecting that the ivermectin might not have been stored properly. It should be stored at room temperature, kept away from heat & LIGHT, and given orally is best, (do not give to collies, shelties, border collies, corgi's and other herding breeds with out talking with your vet...) Also watch that expiration date. I replace mine anually no matter the expiration date.

Also, considering the room temperature storgae - there are certain places I won't buy it from as they are not airconditioned buildings and though they keep fans going and it feels not TOO bad to me, I do not trust that it won't cause some problems from heat after sitting in the cabinet for who knows how many months...

Wow thanks for the info. I plan on getting my meds and such from a friend of mine that owns a vet supply company. I would use him as my vet but he is about 1.5 hours away. Thanks again for the info and I will keep a look out for that.
