Is there a safe way to expedite a female's cycle?

Post by Donnerhund GWP » Mon Nov 19, 2007 8:40 pm

I had a plan!
I prefer female dogs for some reason, so I thought if I had more than one female I would always have onewho wasn't in heat.
Well, I have three female GWPs now and guess what - they have all syncronized their cycles. So now I have three times the "HEAT"
The male dogs in my neighborhood must be losing their minds.
Is their any way to speed-up the heat cycle? Safely?

Not that I know of but I doubt if there is more scent getting to the neighborhood males. You just have to put up with it for the 3 weeks and you are free till they all come back in. Its doubtful they will stay on the same exact cycle though.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

They have been sync'd for the last 3 cycles. It's weird. I know it's coming, so I watch for the signs. It seems to take them a little longer than the traditional "6-months" for them to start but eventually one will get started. The usually within a couple of days of the first dog to come in heat, the other two join right in. It's like they're waiting to see who can hold out the longest.

Maybe you could breed all threeof them and solve those 3 problems for a while but you would then have 20 or 30 new little problems that tend to get bigger every week.

No thanks.
I thought I wanted to be a "breeder" once, but soon found I didn't like it.
Having the litter was fun though I really loved having the puppies around.
...... as a matter of fact, that's why I now have 3 dogs instead of 1. We kept 2 pups from that first litter.

At least you can get it over with at once. Ovaban will stop heat, but is not safe. Recently someone (old timer that is very knowledgable) told me you could give a bitch at the onset of heat human birth control pills one a day for 7-8 days to stop heat... :?: Anyone heard this?

Having one female go into heat will tend to throw others in the house into heat. Having a female near her heat cycle and bringing a male into the mix will tend to throw the female into heat. Facts of dog life.

They always seem to sync up and eventually go in around the same time. Mine go in right after each other. When the one hits - I known the other is a week or so behind - everytime.

If you're not going to breed, why now spay? My girls would be spayed in a heartbeat if I didn't intend to breed them eventually.

I dunno about expaditing the cycle, but a breeder friend of mine SWEARS by chlorophyll pills. She says they somehow block the odor, so nearby males do NOT know her girls are in heat.

I have not tried this myself, but she swears by it.
Sometimes she wished she were sleeping with the right man instead of with her dog, but she never felt she was sleeping with the wrong dog.
